I am a 40+ year old man, and I had tears in my eyes when I finished reading this. You could completely edit out the sex scenes and still have a great story about lost love, mortality, sacrifice, etc.

Thank you, Oliver. This story was beautiful and moving before it was translated and I teared up when looking at. When DGB did the magnificent translation and editing on this I still teared up, as well as crying outright twice. I’m not ashamed to say I can still be moved.
There will be more Sasagawa Hayashi works to follow this one. Perhaps not of this caliber, but his gorgeous style none the less.
