one of the best mangas on earth IMHO

The day you grow tired of dragon ball Z / naruto / bleach the usual shittypopular mangas, in case you don’t know it yet, I really strongly encourage you to discover Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou :)

I updated the online reading links (onemanga.com closing down in a few days), and I manually, and with a lot of love, made the repack of the “complete manga in a Zip” version.
My changes are:
– my addition of tank covers and first|last bonus pictures for every volume. It was missing for the volumes 11-14 still composed with magazine scans, but I used the materials provided by a Spanish version (alt. link) that used tank scans even for the late volumes.
– some covers had awful color balance: fixed
– all pictures renamed with only one pattern, no zillion sub-folders

Read Online (that online version doesn’t have my improvements, FYI)

Here comes the zip link! Help yourselves! ^^
(345 MB, 2206 pictures, English)

Or you can also use the Alternative :
Zip Mirror #1 – or – Zip Mirror #2 – or – Zip Mirror #3
My fixes aren’t much, but still, they’re missing from the online reading version.

Among the good points of this series: a contemplative ambiance, no fights, very moving characters you see evolve across many years, a most unique and interesting point of view on the future of mankind, some sad, so sad, and yet so beautiful and hope-carrying notes, endless beautiful landscapes…
And, last but not least, the manga is over, finished, complete, final period.
Edit: I learned a word, this manga is mono no aware in its purest form…

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou is one of those rare mangas that give you that distinct impression, no, certitude, that, in a subtle way, you’re not the same when you finished reading it, and you feel that’s for the best…

I could write a long time about this manga, but after all, you’re the only one who’ll see if you like it or not. So at least, I give you the link, I hope this will come as an excellent gift to some of you at least :)

Many thanx Oliver for your hard work. I don't get it. Is it 1 long story or different stories? If it's 1 story, what is his name?
Thanx in advance.

Sorry Oliver. I thought that this is the name of the mangaka. I looked now in Baka-Updates and learned that the mangaka is ASHINANO Hitoshi.
My bad.

Hey Oli (may I call you Oli?), I started reading JoJo’s Bizarre recently, but with Onemanga closing down, I have no other place to read it online. Would you happen to know of a place so that I can continue getting my fix?

sorry to say it but as someoene who has seen it a lot this is more than obviously good manga but who got stopped before the previewed end , too many persos having a meaning in the story but getting nowhere at least at the end and ever appearing hints who scream "WE WILL EXPLAIN IT LATER" and so on . good manga but like some others one who seems to have been disapointing to the japanese readers , after all it looks like the introductions of the persos arent finished even after 14 books. and i ve come to loathe those ones they want you to see more but the potential got stopped before really starting.

Oli, I just wanted to take time out of my lurking to express how great this manga is. (think this is my first post here) I discovered this little baby on the weekly featured on mangatraders. Never had I once read a slice of life or anything as slow as this, but god did it grab me. The whole ominous nature of the reality the characters live in leaves you with a little bitter taste in your mouth of how is this possible, but they don't care about that, they happily live and enjoy the little things in their life. The kind of things that might happen to us every day but we never appreciate come to them perhaps once a week or month, yet they enjoy cherish and love everything. It is so hard not to share in the happiness of the events and sometimes uneventful plot in this manga. Its been a year and I miss having coffee with Alpha on those lazy days. I really do.

Many thanks for sharing this. I’ve read the first 5 volumes today, and it’s a very sweet series. The slow, contemplative pace reminds me of Mushishi—a good read, great anime adaptation—but with a brighter tone, perhaps.

I love it Oliver.
I only wish there was more or that I hadn't read through it so quickly.

I do hope you share some more.

If you liked Yokohama, then you might want to consider reading Aria, too.

Fans in Japan considered both Yokohama and Aria as the Twin Goddesses of Soothing. So such name would give you an idea what Aria is like

This was pretty cool! I'm only two volumes in. This seems like a manga i should hate, its so slow, but its fun and worth reading =)

I know it’s an old post, but I read the first chapter of this manga YEARS ago. And finally just found it again, and was looking to see if I could actually buy it. Sadly not, it’s only partially available, and only in Japanese. And out of print. And then I found your archive file. THANK YOU SO FREAKING MUCH. I LOVE this thing, and the other few pieces done by the author. I’ve got to find a reasonable way to buy all of his stuff in print!

I have browsed your blog for a long time many years ago when you recommended this manga that I’ve never heard of before and it seemed interesting, read the first chapters and to be honest at that time I found it a bit boring (still was reading Naruto then :D) so it got dropped.

Quite a long time has passed since then, spent with reading Aria, watching Kino No Tabi, Only Yesterday, playing games like Ico etc., starting to draw/paint myself, and over time slowly I started to appreciate the concept of Mono No Aware, so after remembering your recommendation I tried reading YKK once again after all those years, and well I couldn’t stop, it has become one of my favourite pieces of art ever. Pretty interesting how ones taste can change this much really.

What I am trying to say in this years old comment-section is, originally I have been “coming” here as a horny boy for hentai-manga, obviously, but even after not visiting for a long while and all the time that passed, the first thing that comes to my mind when thinking about this site is not the hentai, but your YKK-recommendation, which is kind of funny, anyway thank you for that!

I’m glad it could help you discover or rediscover new things, then, Pupupun :)

After all, hentai is part of manga, which is part of a larger culture, with a treasure trove of concepts and emotions to experience. Totally worth it over a lifetime =)
