Ten years ago, switching to new PC hardware, I’d be typically hyper happy, boasting about my machine’s specs to everyone, benchmarking the hell out of my PC, and testing the craziest things even if I had no interest in them, just to see how better my machine was faring, eventually basking in ecstasy at just using my machine.

Ten years later, I’m supposed to have become an annoying, green and liberal responsible adult.

Today, my motherboard suddenly died, because there was apparently not enough thermal paste under the CPU (according to my local PC parts shop, it was a miracle the mobo+cpu lasted so long, chill out guys I wanted to say, it was not my doing), and I had to purchase a brand new motherboard + CPU + RAM set.
Double the ram (in order to have two slots and not just one, otherwise you can’t test if a dying RAM slot is a culprit) almost half faster than the previous RAM and of a decent brand (crucial), the CPU is supposedly twice faster (former E2180, now G860), now support for SATA-3.

And you know what ? It’s pissing me off ! :gfy:
I lost something like 270€ in that shit, my time was wasted like mad (I work from home – not even counting the BSODs that were happening more and more lately), but, o the joy, now I can compress zip files twice faster when I prepare hentai shares in the evening. The only time when I’ll really see a difference is when I run a virtual machine, like twice a month.

Sigh, sometimes growing older sucks, the marvelous sides of existence fade away one after the other, it seems. Guys, girls, if you’ve got memories of the time when the plainest things around you were like magical, cherish them in order to bring that feeling back when you can do that – I do :D

tech changes with time Oliver, you just need to keep up with it. if you're not tech savvy like the younger generations, you're gonna lose out.

It's not a fight, Chris, there's no losing or winning.

I still have a Nokia, proud successor to the 3210, and yet I feel no shame at not having a superexpensive smartphone.
No ipad or equivalent.
Not consuming anything that I don't need. Not following trends or fashion.

And, to the contrary, I'm proud of it.

Hi! I totally agree with Oliver.

Twelve years ago i made my first PC swap, from an AMD-K2@450[Mhz] to a [email protected][Ghz]. I was extremely excited, i was finally able to play Doom 3, a Dreamcast emulator at decent speed and view DivX videos with sound! It was a new world of possibilities.

In other hand, my last PC swap was four years ago from a Compaq V3000 (bunch of crap) with Blue Leds of the Death to a Gateway NV52. I was finally able to do… the same things as before, only a bit faster.

I'm not excited with the idea of do a PC swap in the near future, so i'm actually UNDERCLOCKING my CPU (from 2.1[GHz} to 1.05[GHz]) with the hope of extend the life of my CPU as long as possible.

Apply more paste and you might not have to replace anything

I've read "yes, good" and "no, evil" about this whole thermal paste quantity issue. Me, frankly, I have no idea, I can't judge.

Huh, not enough thermal paste? Well I didn't see the thing, but it looks dubious, more like an easy excuse from the vendor about why the CPU fried (not to mention it has heat protection anyway).

Thermal paste is just supposed to fill the tiny imperfections between the CPU and the heatsink, both of which should be perfectly flat in the first place.
On the contrary, *too much* thermal paste is dangerous, like it happened in some Apple laptops a few years ago, causing them to overheat.

Well, this won't revive your dead CPU anyway :-S

Yeah, I hear you on how things just aren’t as great as they used to feel as you grow. Growing up sucks! But still, live with no regrets and make things the best you can while you can. Things could be worse.

Well, growing up also has its good sides.

Sex during 3 hours with a woman in her thirties who knows exactly what she wants ? Jebus ! It's better than ten years ago !

^^;;

I tell ya Oliver, nothing like a faithful steed that you've had for years and years…
I'm still on a 2006 model T180-EA350m; she… she is my friend. Period.
The only thing I have done to her physically is replace and double her RAM.
What a trooper. What a gal! I didn't name her the C.A.I.D.I.S. for nothing:
Computational And Inter-networking Device In Service! She really is…
my adventure.

"not enough thermal paste"… strange, very strange. As i know, the Intel chips has a temp limit setting and when it exceed that, the processor halts only (don't respond at all, don't show BSOD either).
In the nice side, now you have a better machine and you will not be waiting (so much) to finish a task.

Really fishy indeed. Must be vendor's excuse. Like others stated, they have internal safety switch for overheating. But anyways, enjoy your new set. :)
Won't be commenting on that aging thing. Only 27 this summer, and I intend to enjoy the new techs for many and many years to come. :)

The saying is "Never change a running system" for a reason. Setting up a new machine is a pain. Because the one you had is set-up the way you like it. I kept my PC around a long time. I didn't play newer games on it anyway. And to play like old sports managment games and scanlating, it worked fine. I even kept it when I started having trouble booting up, and I would have to boot like 10 times before it stuck. And even then the graphic accelerator would crash and scrolling wouldn't be smooth anymore.

Only after it crashed even more and I had backed up all the settings, written down passwords and programms, I went out and got a new one. But that one I picked the parts myself, instead of just bying a stock model. Choose intel as well. The i5-2500K works really nicely, but unfortunately it costs a bit more. I paid 1400 bucks for the tower alone, so you can bet I'll ride that thing to it's last leg as well.

Oho.. faster packing huh?!… means you got more time to … hmmm .. split humongous archives in smaller parts from now on… *nudge**nudge*
Oh happy day!

Nope, because the "tending to a gazillion additional hyperlinks, and beforehand collecting them" is a true time wasting whore ;)

To be fair the G860 is weeeeaaaaaak…
It's not that you no longer feel the magic, is that that processor isn't capable of allowing you to feel the magic. Now if you had at least a 3.3Ghz i3 (still considered cheap) or any i5 THEN we'd be talking magical amounts of new power over your old system.

You clearly didn't understand my point : I have no uses for power once the required amount is reached. Why pay for more ? To compress zips faster ?

But actually, I'm not blaming you. There's magic for you, and I'm glad for you that you enjoy that magic :)
