How to be very happy and very sad at the same time

Massive wall of text incoming! I apologize in advance. I HAD to write a long piece for this doujinshi, as I was deeply touched, and I hope I can allow those who don’t know of Re:Zero to also enjoy the story :)

So, yeah, this doujinshi should “work” especially well if you’re among the lucky people who have watched Re:Zero. Me, it was the first anime I watched in over a decade and I reckon it was a great show, really. I felt irritated to discover an unconclusive ending, because the anime relied on an ongoing novel that was far from being finished yet, but apart from that, I had emotions, feelings, and moments of amazement and magic.

Now, let’s add the context. Mid-story, the male Hero, Subaru, is at an all-time low, he doesn’t know how to avoid a looming catastrophe, thinks he tried everything without success, wants to give up. It’s at this darkest hour, that we have one of the most beautiful anime moments I know of. Rem (the blue-haired maid), who supported Subaru against all adverse winds, opens her heart to him. And, Subaru, in a moment of despair, begs her, let us run away together, away from everything, let us forget this sad fate, and live a sheltered life, far from all these disasters.
In the real anime, Rem wins our hearts but loses Subaru’s, by rejecting his broken offer, giving him strenght and faith again, and as he springs back to life Subaru remembers he loves another girl. Fuck, I still hate that moment.

Here, in this hentai doujinshi, we’re in an alternate universe, in which Subaru and Rem followed another path. They have run away together, and are now living a happy married life, loving each other, expressing their love, and courageously embracing together a smiling future.
Pure, undiluted vanilla.
Everything Rem would have rightfully deserved.

It made me glad. It made me sad (and conflicted…) It also made me horny, although that’s another topic; the art was great

Well, see for yourselves, I guess?
We owe this great (for the Rem lovers!!) release to N04H from n04h.net, helped by Herzer, with Peganuss as their commmissioner, thank you, I’m deeply grateful! :jap:

Been slowly working my way through this with a friend of mine too. I’m definitely way fonder of Rem than I am of Emilia, and I certainly hope she “wins” in the end even if I’m not particularly happy about Subaru at the moment. (Yeah, I know the show is somewhat inconclusive at the moment — it’s hardly the first show I’ve watched that’s like this.)

Not sure if I want to read this one, though, if it’s an alternate “running away” version. That’s… not a particularly good choice to make either way.

R: “I’m so happy, Subaru-kun! Let’s go visit my sister so I can share my happiness!”

S: “Ah. Well. Remember when it was so cold a few months ago? I’m pretty sure she died around then.”

R: “What? No, Emelia-sama would have let me know!”

S: “Ah. Yeah, she’s probably dead, too. Like, 99% certainty. Sorry.”

*sound of chains rattling*
*sounds of the damned wailing*

S: “Please don’t let that be the sound of your adorable spiked mace on a chain! Please don’t let that be your horn appearing! Please don’t fist my urethra! PLEASE DON’T TEAR MY BODY IN HALF!”

Several brutal minutes later.

S: “Damn it, this is why it’s taken us 5 years to get to our first anniversary!”

The author actually wrote a few short stories in this alternate storyline, with them ending up having children, and Rem growing her hair long. So it is an official alternate universe, not just the fancy of fanboys and doujinshi mangakas.

Yeah, it is inconclusive, but acceptably so, ending a logical stopping point…and ending at proper note of victory. Even with that one slight flaw, it is the best damn anime I’ve seen in years, and easily the best anime of 2016. There are much worse places they could have ended the anime based on the still unfolding storyline in the light and web novels.

That was the most frustrating moment to me of the series, and the only time i desired some kind of torture to the main character of an story. He was hard to bear for most of the series but this time was particularly bad.

This alternate take makes not much sense as if they leave the conflict they trigger an End of Times, or at least of every life form in the whole country, and Rem would have heard of this, even if they move far away …
