I feel like I’m turning in circles lately, in terms of music. I adore what I adore, sure, but when I try at random to discover new stuff, most of the time my attempts end up in boredom and lack of lasting interest.

Would you like to add a comment with suggestions, for songs, or bands, that are “special” to you, and you think would be worth discovering for others, be it me, or anyone else reading the comments in the future? :)

Personally, I only dislike rap and hip-hop (I still like a few songs in it, but an extremely small number.)
Other than that, I’m a huge fan of prog rock and metal, both the northern European and American branches; not so much death metal, I prefer understandable lyrics and focus more on music than grunting ^^
But, really, I’m extremely open to suggestions, in all genres, if it’s not metal/prog rock, absolutely no worries, maybe I’ll like it, or maybe someone else will be delighted to have read your suggestion :)

(I’m sharing my own special songs in the comments.)

If you like Prog-Metal, you should also check Arjen Anthony Lucassen’s bands, like Ayreon.

This is the kind of sweet melodic musics he do:

“– No More Lies, by Iron Maiden. Oh,and their Fear Of The Dark. Iron Maiden is the northern American band that struck me the most, in their group…”

Great songs.

OH!
And Iron Maiden are British, not American.

Besides them I’d recommend Iced Earth, my favorite from them is Dark Saga album.

Genres I like:

* Jpop, mostly from anime because I’m a big weaboo. But not understanding the language keeps it from distracting me, so it’s great background.
* Zydeco / Cajun, usually around Mardi Gras, of course. There’s enough French so it’s also good for not distracting me.
* 80s Electronica, because part of me will always be stuck in that era.
* Electro Swing, because I like anything with a beat.
* Soft Jazz, as long as it’s not too Elevator and I’m not too sleepy.
* Trucking songs. I don’t have a lot of them, but that’s okay because they all sound the same!

Groups that I think are worth a listen:
* Black Eyed Peas, such a huge variety of songs and styles.
* Counting Crows. Didn’t like them at first, but I could tell they were good, so I just kept listening.
* Days of the New/Tantric. I don’t even LIKE this style of Rock, that’s how good they are!
* Fun. Auto-tuned and overly commercial, but still quite good.
* Moby. The old stuff he did for clubs, back before he went insane and started doing his own singing.
* New York Ska Jazz Ensemble. Timelessly awesome.
* Oingo Boingo. Danny Elfman at his craziest, working out his insanity.
* Republic Tigers. Only 1 fuckin’ album? Music so good that it’s torture!
* Steam Powered Giraffe. Goofy as Hell but amazing talent. And sometimes you just need some steampunk.
* Steely Dan/Donald Fagen. Love that retro-future vision. George Jetson never goes out of style.
* Talking Heads. You know, they put out a LOT of albums before they turned to crap!

Since you said all genres, how about classical indian music? Instrumental and vocal.
A few links; see if you like it:
————————————————
Vocal –

Ranjish hi sahi by Iqbal Bano
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfjFzNk7QPQ

Koyalia bole (Raag Tilak Kamod) by Pt. DV Paluskar
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evDB5G_4R7w

Chaita Mase (Raag Mishra Pahadi) by Girija Devi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIdotbeFx8s
————————————————-
Instrumental (the tabla (indian drum) usually comes in later, so if you do not have the patience to listen to the slow part at the beginning, you can skip ahead)-

Raag Manj Khamaj by Pt. Ravi Shankar (Sitar) and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan (Sarod)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6Vv-60rjec

Raag Desh by Pt. Manilal Nag (Sitar) and Ustad Ali Ahmad Hussain Khan (Shehnai)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfsAExHyvgs

Raag Bhupali by Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia (Flute)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOkeFX0UQVg
————————————————-
I myself am learning to play the sitar, and whenever I need inspiration I listen to these great Maestros. The instrumental music is generally great BGM, as long as you are not drawn into the tune!

My dad listened to smooth jazz when I was growing up so I listened to smooth jazz:
-Ronnie Jordan, The Antidote album
-Ramsey Lewis, Tequila Mockingbird album
-Hubert Laws, Farandole
-George Benson, Affirmation and Breezin’
-Grover Washington Jr, Mr Magic

Everyone else in my family listened to R&B, funk, and soul
-Earth, Wind, and Fire; Fantasy, just about their whole catalog is good
-George Clinton and Parliament; his funk kinda started the whole Electronica movement
-James Brown, godfather of soul, nuff said.
-O’Jays, Spinners, and Temptations for old school R&B
-Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, for revolutionary soul music; We People Who are Darker than Blue is one of my favorites.
-Kool and the Gang; Summer Madness, Hollywood Swinging, Cherish the Love

I like weird music too so…
-VG soundtracks; Tim Follin (Silver Surfer, C64 music, etc) OST, TMNT – Arcade Game, any Castlevania OST, Maktone Crack/Keygen music

-Ray Stevens (Gitarzan, The Streak)
-Art of Noise, Close

Classical Music, Instrumental, etc:
-Fugues by Bach
-Ashokan Farewell, Jay Unger
-Sixteen Loads, Tennessee Earl Ford

I’m an all over the place kind of guy when it comes to music.

One of my big things is like jazz fusion.
Dimension is a really good band! But their albums are hard to find for 2 reasons. They are a Japanese band and their album names are numbers like 23, 24, etc. I’m particular to their album 26. The songs like Visions, Monochrome, Cool in the Shade. All great music.

– Bruno Mars… his last album was really good.
– Little V Mills
– Johnathan Young
– RichaadEB
– Mesmonium

I’d also introduce you to The King of Fighters soundtracks. Video game music is fucking great too. My favorite of the series are from KOF 97 – KOF XI. Here are other game series that have really good soundtracks
– Street Fighter EX series has really good music for the time it’s from.
– Guilty Gear Xrd (Daisuke Ishiwatari is just too damn good)
– BlazBlue
– (If you haven’t heard by now) Cuphead
– Marvel vs Capcom 2
– Persona 5 (or anything Shoji Meguro has had his hands on)
– MegaMan X series
– Tekken series before all the Dubstep(Meaning Tekken 1 thru 5)
– Castlevania
– Sonic Mania
– Daytona USA (Old school cheesy goodness)

J-Rock/Metal/Pop, Anime OPs and EDs
– Dir en Grey
– Girugamesh
– The Gazette
– UVERworld
– Sukima Switch
– Crow’sClaw
– Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas (High energy music here!)
– Kanako Itou
– Man With a Mission
– Superfly
– SID
– The Seatbelts
– FLOW (COLORS is most well known songs)
– Coldrain
– The DU
– Nano
– EGOIST
– Granrodeo
– ONE OK ROCK
– Kalafina

Any others?
– Animals as Leaders
– Protest the Hero
– Corelia
– Tetrafusion
– Novallo
– Anarchy Club
– Destrage
– Exotic Animal Petting Zoo
– Cyclamen
– Gorod
– Erra

I think that’s all i can give you for now… Hopefully you like something or may have even heard of some of these bands or such.

I’m just throwing these out there.
kissmenerdygirl – Hypnotic Eyes
AGRUME – Love Beam (long fade-in, song starts kicking into gear at :20)
Literally anything by Buddy Rich
Chopin’s piano pieces, too many to list.
Havok’s Time is Up entire album. Thrashy, but still clean in its technicality and the singer hits some good high notes.
Flamingosis x YUNG BAE – Come and Get It
YUNG BAE and his Bae albums. BAE, BAE 2 and BA3.
Saint Pepsi/Skylar Spence – Enjoy Yourself
Saint Pepsi/Skylar Spence – Better
MACROSS 82-99 – Sailorwave (album)
Flamingosis and YUNG BAE’S entire discography, they’re damn good.
If you find you like a good amount of songs from Flamingosis, YUNG BAE, Saint Pepsi and/or MACROSS 82-99, check a Ut00b channel called Artzie Music for more. Sorry if I violated comment rules by shilling a ut00b channel, it just covers ground faster.

Hmm. So many to choose from. You didn’t mention any “classic” metal bands, so I will just throw out the names Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. More modern metal bands that you failed to mention include Slipknot, Stone Sour, and Five Finger Death Punch. A newer favorite of mine in Motionless in White.

If you want something ridiculously odd and fun, I would suggest Babymetal. It’s J-pop death metal. Yes, you read that correctly.

Another fun thing I would suggest is to go on YouTube and search for videos by Leo Moracchioli. He does metal covers of pop songs that are *very* well done. (His heavy Metal version of “Despacito” is a favorite of mine)

The last thing I would suggest is there is a free website and phone app called “I heart radio”. You can give them a name of a favorite band/artist, and they will create a playlist of other similar bands and artists. Its a great, free way to find new music similar to stuff you already like. (And yes, there is a “pay” version of the website/app, just ignore it).

I’d like to add a genre to the suggestions:
Synthwave
– Carpenter Brut – Turbokiller
– Carpenter Brut – Disco Zombi Italia
– Carpenter Brut – Meet Matt Stryker

– Waveshaper – Radiosignal
– Waveshaper – Asteroid Field

– Dance with the Dead – Cobra
– Dance with the Dead – Robeast

infact I can go on listing synthwave tracks, maybe easier to share a link to my bandcamp:

that’s basicly my taste
suppose special mention should go out to the Soundtrack for Furi, that OST is absolutely amazing

My favorite music change from time to time, but for now i really like Wagakki Band from Japan, i think they are unique because they mix between modern instrumen and traditional japanese instrumen ( 4 modern and 4 traditional), if you interesting try listening zenbon (or senbon) sakura and ikusa for staters, i fell in love with them from that 2 song

Hope this help :)

Some great suggestions, and many new artists I now want to explore. May I offer…

Miles Davis – Kind of Blue – maybe the single best jazz recording ever.
Herbie Hancock – Takin’ Off – his first LP.
Art Farmer – Soul Eyes – and American flumpet player who spent many years living in Vienna.
Curtis Mayfield – Superfly soundtrack – my favorite LP.
Bebel Gilberto – Tanto Tempo – the daughter of Astrid & Joao Gilberto (The Girl From Impanema) debut LP.
Eighteenth Street Lounge Soundtracks – Jet Society – various artists, lyrics in Portuguese.
Nino Tempo – Live at Cicada – Nino Tempo and band at Bernie Taupin’s club in LA.
Taj Mahal – Giant Step/De Ole Folks at Home – two LPs on one CD, and a great collection of his bluesey folk awesomness (Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, awesome).
Me’Shell Ndegeocello – Peace Beyond Passion – super sexy

Enjoy!

My folks gave me the gift of music while I was growing up. Add in 3 older siblings I learned to appreciate most if not all forms. But recently I have been getting a lot of joy from “Post Modern Jukebox”. They take modern pop and top 40 and rearrange them in the style of 40’s, 50’s and Jazz. 90% of their stuff are covers but the way they do it is fresh and cool, Daddio.

So random
*shrugs*

I’m a fan of KOTOKO.
My all-time favourite J-Pop, “being” is from her(been listening to this song on a nearly daily basis for 10 years now): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJyCWCFfQdY

In addition to anime, she also does music for eroges and some of them are really awesome like “suppuration~ core”, “Face of Fact”, “went away”

Other than that, I dont have a particular favourite artist. As long as I hear a song I like, I generally dont care who is singing it.

Someone mentioned Babymetal, so I wont

*shrugs*

allright, i noticed many good suggestions in many genre, but almost nothing metal :O so here’s my metalhead picks:

-Trivium: Like lights to the fly, Ascendency, Washing away me in the tides, Shogun, Torn between Scylla and Charybdis, Into the mouth of hell we march, of prometheus and the crucifix, like callisto to the stars in heaven, This world cant tear us apart, watch the world Burns, Vengeance Falls.

All that Remains: Two weeks, Whispers (i hear you calling), Six, Forever in your hands, Chiron, The last time.

In Flames: Almost all of their stuff honnestly, this in one of the bands where i can put the CD in and let it all play without skipping a track.

Lamb of God: Laid to rest, Omerta, Remorse is for the Dead.

As i lay Dying: An Ocean between Us, The forsaken, I never wanted, The sound of Truth, Anodyne sea, Parallels, Upside Down kingdom, The blinding of False Light.

Atreyu: Ex’s and O’s, The Theft, The remembrance Ballad, Becoming the Bull, Demonology and Heartache, Bleeding Mascara, Stop! Before It’s Too Late and We’ve Destroyed It All, You were the king, now your unconcious.

Sum 41 (ok, not all that metal, but still): We’re all to blame, No reason, Open your eyes

I could go on for a while but i’ll leave it like this for now. Hope some of it suit your tastes ;)

I can only second YxolloxY because he’s right, Carpenter Brut and Dance With The Dead hell yes !!

I’ll add two more in the genre :

Perturbator : Venger/Sentient/The Cult of 2112 (really the whole album The Uncanny Valley)
Kavinsky : he did some great stuff (Nightcall obviously)

More synthwave/darkwave :

BlutEngel !
Colony 5 (The Bottle/Psycho Blonde)
VNV Nation (Lightwave)
Assemblage 23
Funker Vogt (Red Queen)
Tamtrum (My Fall, a french band with french lyrics please !)
Re-Set (Static, a pain to find but great track !)
Wolfsheim (The sparrows and the nightingales)

On the metal side :

Sirenia !
Mono Inc (Children of the night/Arabia/After the War/The Banks of Eden)
Lord of the Lost (Six feet underground)
In Flames

On the techno side :

So.much.stuff.
I’ll list a few trance classics just because, and even if the genre is 99% cheese nowadays there are truly some gems to bo found.

The age of love (eponym track)
Legend B (Lost in love)
P.U.S.H (Universal nation)
Scooter (Stuttgart)

… And the list goes on

;)

P.S. I replied to a previous post by mistake, my bad. It was meant to be a normal post from the start

and for the other extrem some Anime Soundtracks

You already mentioned Nightwish, my favorite band. Floor is a goddess and their best vocalist yet, but I still have so much love for Tarja. Naming a few bands I love

Nightwish! Saw them in ’16, seeing them again next year!

Delain – saw them w/ Nightwish last year and fell in love with them. Start with their April Rain album.

Leaves Eyes – particularly the first 2 albums, but everything up to and including Symphonies of the Night is good.

Xandria – particularly the last few albums that feature Dianne, but they’re good all around

Epica – their newest album Holographic Principle is amazing, they make great music

Kamelot – everything from Ghost Opera to current is flawless, but if I had to pick 1 album I’d say Poetry for the Poisoned.

Devin Townsend Project – every album is a whole new sound, seems like. Addicted and Epicloud Are the 2 best IMO, but all the Devin Townsend / Band / Project albums have their merit.

Foo Fighters – really digging them lately. Wasting Light is the best, but it’s all good

Stone Sour – Hydrograd is the album of the year

I can, but won’t go on. Music is my life first and foremost.

Hmmm… where to begin…

In this Moment –
Disarmonia Mundi –
GALNERYUS – (This one is really cool, one of the HxH openings)
Devin Townsend Project – The entire album is great.
Mykool –
Red –
Leverage – (You have to listen to the intro as well, from Circus Colossus album)
The Paper Melody – and
Brother Firetribe – The whole album.
Metalite – (Sounds very much like Amaranthe)
Above the Earth – (I don’t know why only this song is good on their album)
Beast In Black –

I also love Masterplan, Jørn Lande in general, Wagakki Band, Babymetal, Two steps from Hell, but these have already been named.

* Camel Driver – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCctgKElZ0A – Cool instrumetal Progressive/Stoner/Jazz/Fusion/Rock kind of thing.

* Y&T – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zq_G3sOzJ4 – Awesome rock band, one of the last truly great.

* Primus – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQv8zNQX578 – Love these guys, total whackjobs. Also some of the best instrumentalists I’ve ever seen.

* Audioslave – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfF4t9-wpCM – Really love this 90’s/early 2000’s sound. Whatever happened to it?

* Limp Bizkit – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dn8vzTsnPps – Yeah, I know. Anyway, an awesome band, they know their shit!

* Chakora – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDeFlAojl5g – Another unknown band, from Germany this time, some kind of groovy Metal with really cool hooks.

* Skindred – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-kmLkfFrtU – Metal and Raggae, why not? :D

* Mike Love – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fU7hZ3smj0g – This guy is a musical genius. I have nothing to add.

* Michael Manring – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eTBc7aWBGw – He is, too.

* Alien Ant Farm – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25fdBxNEo5U – And finally the best cover song ever made. Also a really cool band with this 90’s sound.

That’s all I can think of right now…

I was about to recommend : Pink Floyd the Wall & the also The Divisiion Bell – but you already know Gilmour so…
And since i’m sure your metal knowledge is probably bigger than mine, then, here are a few stuff i’ve been enjoying lately :
– Violent Femmes – New times album
– any old Dire Staits
– any Midnight Oil
– any Weeser
– If you like Classical, try some violonist called Joshua Bell – he’s great at his job (try meditation de Thais from Massenet)
– If you like piano, try anything played by Tamas Vasary – that guy’s a genius too (just try Chopin – Concerto n°2 fa mineur. to check)
oh also, you might enjoy some good ol’ Neil Young too !

if you are willing to listen to Korean music at all, then I’d like to write down some songs ^^

Jaurim (Alternative Rock)
Twenty Five, Twenty One
Icarus
Shining

Deli Spice (Alternative Rock)
Chau Chau
Confession

Yoon Mi Rae (Rap/Hip-Hop)
(I know you don’t like Rap, but she is comsidered to be living legends of Korean Rap)
Black Happiness
A.N.G.E.L – song done with her husband, Tiger J.K. – and this song is pretty catchy, but if you listen to the words they say, it’s really good)

If you watch anime and/or listen to anime soundtracks, then I’d definitely recommend these

Kill La Kill
Death Parade

for American bands

The Corrs (Folk Rock)
pretty much every song in this video

Jimmy Eat World
The Middle

(I’m pretty sure you know who this is, but putting it down anyway)

Green Day
Wake Me Up When September Ends
21 Guns
