Looked at the previous post on the topic, too long wouldn’t follow without two free days and a pot of coffee, any-who Ive always put the concept of cheating as such.
Its only cheating if it would upset the partner if they knew.
Now I’m NOT saying that as a “Its okay if they don’t find out” idea, I’m saying this as in the situation “If person A were to find out that person B is having sex with person C and wouldn’t have an issue it is NOT cheating. If person A were to find out that person B is having sex with person C and WOULD HAVE an issue, it is cheating.”
And the reason I hold this idea is because it doesn’t matter if person A ever finds out, it only matters if B is willing to hurt someone they care about even if they don’t ever find out.
Person B is NOT owned by person A, but A does own some part of the relationship shared by A & B. If B is willing to damage that relationship then they really don’t care about A as much as they care about their own comfort. Which is human nature, but still something I personally dislike.
I cant tell anyone how to feel about the subject of cheating, but I got to ask, if you really don’t care about someones feelings enough to at least take into consideration how they would feel if they knew you hurt them, do you really care about that person?
A TL;DR version of this long-ass discussion would be there’s an opposition between two cultures, the white knights of total honesty and never making exceptions, vs the “grease in the engine” lenient ones for whom there’s a schism between theory and practice and if it allows society to work and relations to last maybe it’s not so bad.
When you’re trying to be persuasive it helps to represent the other side objectively. In this case you have the people who say ‘one party is restraining their cheating urges/impulses so the other party should be expected to as well’ versus the people who say ‘needs and urges are normal and if you have to cheat to fulfill them so you can continue the relationship(s) you want then it’s okay as long as no one finds out.’ The fact that the latter perspective is a rather self-centered one may or may not be bad depending on how you view the inherent conflict between natural urges and the behaviors people have to exhibit for relationships and society to function. I stick to the idea that if you’re not getting something you need then you should discuss it with your partner and either work out a resolution or look for a different situation if it can’t be resolved.
I think it is a difference of cultures. In the Latin Romance nations(France, Spain, Italy, Romania, etc.) total honesty with your partner is not always seen as a good thing. It could be seen as rude. You have an issue with the relationship, it could be seen as mean to bring it to your partner’s attention, almost like putting them down. These cultures are more accepting of you each have your own secrets and as long as you are discreet, it is acceptable. France actually has a cultural phenomenon about it called l’heure bleue(Blue Hour) which is when you meet up with your mistresses.
On the other hand, you have the Anglo-Saxon groups(English world and some Germanics) where honesty between partners is considered paramount. It is acceptable to discuss relationship issues with your partner, and possible solutions. Infidelity takes a more negative tone in these countries than in the Latin Romance nations. Cheating of course does happen in them(It happens everywhere, and is a side effect of social primates trying to be monogamous), but it isn’t as socially acceptable in the Anglo-Saxon world.
So one of the interesting aspects about cultures is France and the Latin Romance nations have a lower divorce rate than Anglo-Germanic nations, as you simply get discreetly what you need physically/intimately, but things like Polyamory(Open relationships, swinging, etc.) are more common in the Anglo-Germanic peoples.

Calling it a culture shock is an understatement. I simply couldn’t imagine there were two cultures at all, at first.

In all honesty I understood the different social contexts, but you put forth a very good explanation of it. I was more objecting to the rather one-sided representation. ‘My side is right and the other side is a bunch of jerks’ isn’t really my thing.
To me, though, the really interesting part is how few people are aware of the subconscious assumptions they make about things and how often those back brain scripts influence our interpretations of what we see.
In a certain sense both sets of comments are guilty of exactly the point you’re painting. We have the ‘Romance’ way to view things and the ‘Anglo-Saxon’ viewpoint but in a sense the only one that really matters is the Japanese viewpoint. How do they view the situation? I’m not informed enough to know, but the rest of the discussion can really just be summed up as the Anglos and the Romancers forcing their views onto a Japanese story.
My knowledge of Japanese culture is pretty low, but I do know that other East Asian cultures(Mongolia, Manchus, Korea) use to have an extreme view of female infidelity.

To be fair, for me personally, I would be fine if my theoretical sigoth (significant other) fantasied about infidelity so long as she never actually carried out the act or left me for someone else. My complaint with the story isn’t where the ending stopped so much as the complete lack of ability to determine what the housewife felt about the discovery. We got her surprise at it, but was she relieved that it was out so she could get a divorce? Was she upset because she actually ‘loved’ the man she was cheating on? We don’t know. And yes, I put ‘love’ in quotes because it’s a murky area. If you want to continue a relationship with someone even while cheating on them do you love them or are they just a possession that makes you feel ‘good’ in some way that you don’t want to give up? Too much is unknown here. Why is she cheating? Is it because the husband is a herbeviore or has some other reason, and hasn’t touched her in ages?
