The last time I heard about Code Geass was when only the 2 first episodes had been released, and the hype was very good about it. And then, I didn’t hear anything anymore about it. I don’t say it sucks, just that I didn’t hear anymore about it. Say, guys, how good is Code Geass ? Great, average, awful ?

Well, as for Code Geass.
As mecha anime series go, that one is quite good.

I really liked Code Geass, I’d put in the “really good but maybe not great” category. It definitely wasn’t really your typical shounen/mecha anime. I think the biggest thing that separated it for me was the protagonist. Definitely a thinker rather than a straight up fighter, ruthless and willing to sacrifice anything for his cause. His attitude kind of reminded of Kira from Death Note, but I liked Lelouch way, way more.

The first season ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, so it’ll be interesting to see how the second season goes.

I myself found it average overall. The main character, Lelouch, is basically a bastardisation of Light from DeathNote, and Suzaku is a clone of Kira from Gundam Seed. The mechs were ass ugly as well, the mech fighting bleh, and the only redeeming thing was the storyline was above average. Don't watch it

@Nona, do you really believe Light to be the first character of it’s type in anime ever? Was Gundam the first mecha anime? Was Kira the first emo main character ever? Don’t think everthing you said was original in the first place, a good series can’t be measured by saying it’s characters are similar to X or Z.

Code Geass has an animation quality and plot consistency far beyond your average series (though a bit dramatic). Well, so you didn’t like the mech battles/design… I mean, do you really think it’s possible to please everyone? I for one enjoyed the mecha designs, more flexible than those you see on Gundam.

From 1 to 10, the least I’d give it would be a 9.

One more thing, to further prove my point:

“Since its premiere, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion has collected numerous awards and accolades. At the sixth annual Tokyo Anime Awards held at the 2007 Tokyo International Anime Fair, Code Geass won the best TV anime series award.[18] In noted Japanese anime magazine Animage’s 29th Annual Anime Grand Prix, Code Geass won the most popular series award, with Lelouch Lamperouge also being chosen as the most popular male character and “Colors” being chosen as the most popular song. At the first Seiyu Awards held in 2007, Jun Fukuyama won the award for best actor in a leading role for his performance as Lelouch Lamperouge in the series, while Ami Koshimizu won the award for best actress in a supporting role for her performance as Kallen Stadtfeld. Furthermore, Code Geass won the award for Best TV Animation at the twelfth Animation Kobe event, held annually in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture.”

Now tell it’s not a great series.

You mean plot inconssitency lil l0l don’t you? Or were you sarcastic? Because Geass was THE anime who droped any plot continuity(and sometimes even logic) to achieve dramatic climaxes

not the best anime I’ve seen so far (I’m still waiting for a continuation of Metal Panic …)

as for Code Geass, interresting in how they just go one way and then break what seemed to be the ongoing story and it’s disturbing
interresting in that you can’t predict anything so you really want to see the next episode but that’s about it

“ca ne casse pas trois pattes a un canard” as one would say

@ Mistic, Well, I didn’t really enjoy “you know who”‘s death scene in episode 22/23 (if I’m not mistaken, and don’t say the name, it’s spoilers, in case Oliver decides to watch it)

Still, they an acceptable explanation, and just because I didn’t want (X) to die, doesn’t mean the series suck. Still, I can understand how you may feel that way. Besides that controversial scene, the plot is rather high quality, don’t you say? You don’t really see that many good plots nowadays…

@ Dafen, by reading your comment I see you enjoy Full Metal Panic, it must be the anime type Action/Comedy you are most turned to.

Since Code Geass is a rather serious series (Full Metal Panic also has it’s moments, but it shows a lot more comedy that Code Geass) maybe you don’t appreciate it that much?

Also, is that a french proverb?

“It doesn’t break a three legs to a duck”?

Does it mean it’s not THAT amazing?

Anyways, even though you guys said that, do you think it’s a “worth watching” series or not?

With all those awards:

Best TV anime series of 2007 (6th Tokyo Anime Awards)

Most popular series (Animage?s 29th Annual Anime Grand Prix)

Best TV Animation (12th Animation Kobe)

Lelouch (Main Character) chosen as the most popular male character (Animage?s 29th Annual Anime Grand Prix)

?Colors? (Opening Song) chosen as the most popular song (Animage?s 29th Annual Anime Grand Prix)

Jun Fukuyama won the award for “Best actor in a leading role” for his performance as Lelouch Lamperouge (1st Seiyu Awards)

Ami Koshimizu won the award for “Best actress in a supporting role” for her performance as Kallen Stadtfeld. (1st Seiyu Awards)

7 Awards! Definitely a MUST WATCH series, you can’t just ignore all of those awards, they show just how good Code Geass really is.

*Seiyu = voice actor (for those who didn’t know)

Taken from one review which I personaly agree with. I’m quite bad in expressings my ideas fluently in english so please don’t blame for quoting:

“While Code Geass had an interesting premise that seemingly got off to a good start, it’s unfortunate the creators of the show had no idea how to handle the mass of ideas they had, or perhaps they simply didn’t care. New plot elements are introduced while at the same time are others are pushed back and delayed, sometimes by many episodes, and sometimes taken out of the show entirely, left to be settled in the 2nd season yet to air. The writing completely flat lines half way through and instead of the gripping and fast paced war/revenge story we had, we then dive headfirst into utterly inane romance drama with a resolution so incredibly bone headed that the series has almost turned into a comedy. As the series moves on, almost as if the romance was a checkbox on a “to do” list of the plot, the series gradually builds up again, making you think it may yet recover, despite the still omnipresent idiocy, but the show sees fit to deliver a “plot twist” so completely over the top and ridiculous, the writers have wrecked absolutely everything that the series had built in it’s first half, only to deliver one of the most stupid and pathetic twists in recent years. I can’t imagine the writers had any other intention rather than having the audience laugh at the absurdity of it all. The series seems to want to be so many things at the same time. It wants to be a gripping war story, a drama about revenge, it wants to include romance and tragedy, but without foregoing humour. Unfortuntely it was unable to do any of these right.

Now my opinion about X’s death. I don’t like cliched weak characters. I wanted X to die and it did. I enjoyed it. However overall the show just aims for those shocking moments without considering overall story. Or I feel like it atleast. If you look outside the box. The idea for the plot is quite good, but what they done with it could be much, much better. Most typical anime viewer just thinks “omg I didn’t expect that to happen(dramatic climax)” and forgets that they totaly forgot to finish what they were doing before plot wise.
P.S. I liked the anime altogether. 8/10 since story/char designs/animation/impression were top notch. Exept for the story consisstency…

Ok, I’ll settle with that. I can’t disagree with the review you showed and your own comments.

About the plot, X’s death was bound to happen, it’s one of those characters that’s just there to be killed and add to the drama. From the start, X’s relationship with Z (sorry for this, but you should know who I’m talking about) showed it, Z’s “true power” was to be awakened by X’s death.

The plot does show some things, but that’s also bound to happen with complicated plots, it creates different points of view, and to some it might be good, to others bad.

Still, we can all agree (I think) that Code Geass is at a different level from your average anime series.

I can’t say it was perfect, but it still deserves attention, and it shows that the anime world is slowly changing from that “Me sees, me smashes” action series.

Oliver, I don’t know if you bothered reading my 3 (including this one) extensive comments (and Mistic’s last one, seeing as it’s a bit large as well), but if you’re still wondering whether you should watch Code Geass or not, watch it. It’s nice, though not as good as it’s doujins. =P

the actual anime is prob one of the best (to me) and the best mecha anime ive seen since fmp it goes in my top 3 fav mecha anime w/ ease and fights for #1 fav of mecha w/ gundam wing

its the type of anime where u want to see what happens in the next ep so u keep watching and waiting for next ep etc and then when its all done ure like dude that was cool or meh for me it was friggen awesome though

if u liked death note and u like mecha or like it to some extent ull love code geass its the death note of mecha anime thats how id describe it myself

im waiting for the second season like crazy cuz the first seasons ending was such a cliff hanger it pisses u off but makes u want more sooo much

honnestly, I did enjoy Code Geass in the beginnin but after a while, I got tired of it

I enjoy FMP for the good laughs, true, but I also watch more serious series such as Gundam 00 (just to mention the latest one)

I can understand Code Geass having rewards, but I really find the ending being rushed and it didn’t seem right

I recently was told that a second season was coming, so I now understand the reason for such an ending but it still is a bad ending in itself from my point of view that is.

there where so many unused elements, unanswered questions, unfinished stories .. at the end, I couldn’t understand what was going on in the background while the main story was getting more and more boring

hopefully, season 2 will make it better

This may seem like a stupid thing to say now that it has been more than a year since the last comment on this board, but I think it’s worth noting to anyone else who comes here now that when you consider both seasons of Code Geass has a whole series the overall impression is much better. In fact, it’s even better than what some of the other positive comments make it out to be.
