Terabytes ? Here I come >_<
I think most of you guys have read my angry lines, since two weeks, about my computer being broken down. It was a dead motherboard, my computer was fixed with a new mobo, so all is cool. Not ! >_<
Just yesterday, my wife’s computer halted indefinitely. Fortunately it was a Dell with their astounding consumer service, we had a technician coming for free this morning to fix it if possible, or else to replace whatever part was broken. Conclusion : the hard disk had died. Blast it, one year worth of life, of personal files and of professional work lost in a second ! >_< That’s the very first time a hard disk dies like that without the slightest warning or symptom allowing us to backup the most precious things before the final death, fuck it The disk and computer being one year and less than 1 month old, we didn’t even consider yet the interest of backing up stuff.
I had already purchased a Terabyte-large hard disk for my personal use (95€ for a Tb disk isn’t that expensive, honestly), I’m going to buy a second one, place it into an external USB rack, and make it the official “important data” collective backup unit to be used every month >_<
If I can give you an advice, dear visitors : don’t wait too much, back up your stuff, it hurts too much otherwise
Allright, following next, here is my personal reflink at a cheap hard disk online store, OK ? Just kidding, unfortunately
You should seriously consider RAID 1, given the cost of hard drives these days…
About RAID, the problem is that I do not have the slightest beginning of technical knoweledge regarding this. I had nanoscopic crumbles of knoweledge about it the IDE age, but now everything is progressively going SATA, I am even more stranger to Raid…
it’s happened to me twice in the past, so now i save my new porn files to a tb external every three or four days, and documents/anime/tv shows to a 1/2 tb external every day. my pr0n will forever be safe!
Lol, personally, I mainly thought of backing up the personal files, the work files, the digital photographs, the email folders… I didn’t think of backing up the porn stuff in fact ^^;;
stupid question, but did you try using a recovery tool on the drive? ive had a LOT of hard drives crashed that, when plugged in with usb and using a tool like R-Studio, i was able to recover at LEAST 95% of the data after a few passes. sure, it took a few days but its worth it
My Caviar Black is a beast. TBs are great.
IT’s actually pretty easy, your dell machine (if you bought it within the past 2 years comes with RAID options pre-built)
Having servers, you should consider RAID 1/5/10….Easiest way to retain all your info while having the option to change failed drives within downtime….
It’s pretty sweet….if you need help with in, let me know and I can easily walk you through it all, especially if your running off Dell Hardware.
Live jackspade said, have you tried any recovery tools. I had an external die on me a few months back, really not that hard.
I bought an external enclosure, which is just a good thing to have around anyways, and and ran a program. Can’t remember which one, but there are a bunch of free ones out there.
well to backup stuff and remain sure that it doesnt get corrupted writing in dual layer DVD’s and vacum sealing em in a box until you need em works wonders.
Online storage is also good
dont toss out that old hd yet
theres program called “getdataback” try that out first to see what files u can save off of old hd
dude, i feel your pain, just stop to say that a lost like that is painfull but you can get trough it..
did i sound that geek XD, but really, nothing worse that when tecnology feels like fucking around and stop function just to make fun of us..
sorry, me bad english(this was supossed to be a joke)
I also use Carbonite in additon to local hardware backups. Look for a 15% discount via Google, and it makes for a very reasonably priced off-site backup solution.
I’ve been burned using hard drives as my backup media. The only drive that ever died without warning was my backup drive. I was using CD then DVD and now blu ray. I am considering the new solid state drives to hold my personal stuff. Just waiting for them to get higher capacity and cheaper.
I had the same problem before. My Mac Mini died without warning with my important stuff in it. I was considering paying for professional data rescue, but before that, try the following (if your hd still spins):
If you have a Linux Box, look up ddrescue or dd_rescue (they are different), choose whatever it works for you. What it does is it’ll try to copy the image of the hd.
try put the hd in an external enclosure, and plug it straight into the Linux Box (mine was Ubuntu), I was able to mount it (much to my surprise since my Mac couldn’t) and retreive the data. There will be few corrupted files, but at least you’ll get the majority of the data back.
Cskills is correct about how easy it is to set up a RAID array. Like many aspects of building computers these days, RAID setup has become increasingly mainstream.
Just about every motherboard above budget models has RAID setup/management built right in at the BIOS level, and all the major OSes can handle RAID drives. All you have to do in most cases is enable RAID in the BIOS and then you can go into a utility screen where you can pick which disks to include in the RAID array and what level of RAID to use.
RAID level 5 is the most reasonable for most personal use in terms of peformance, data security, and cost. You use N drives for N-1 worth of space (e.g. 3 1TB drives for 2TB of space). Such an array can survive a single drive going bad without data loss (home computers rarely have multiple drives die at once). Just make sure to replace the dead drive as soon as it goes bad.
The one obvious problem setting up RAID is you want to make sure you backed up any info on the drives being used since you will lose it usually when the array is created.
Damn, same thing happened to me. I had a Dell with a Samsung hard drive, that kept clicking and making wierd noises. I frequently got the blue screen of death, and unfortunately my hard drive later died (apparently it had been faulty even before it left the factory). My OS couldn’t run, but somehow my friend was able to copy my files off it. I got it replaced for free and now its all ok.
Though it took 2 weeks for me XD
Oh man ! A TB !! That’s awesome !! just last week i bought an external USB disk of 1TB Maxtor MyBook for those who knows… guess the price… 80€!! Ok it’s a conversion because i’m living in malaysia now and they don’t use euro currency *obvious*
I’m going back to France soon so if someone want something i’ll buy it then send it when i’ll be back in my lovely country
cheers !
If you really NEED the files on a broken disk (i’m talking about a hardware pb, not something that can be resolved with an program), it’s still possible in most cases to have them back, but at a totally ridiculous price (1800euros for me, in France). It involves repairs in white room and stuff, not something anyone can do.
RAID is great, but it doesn’t solve the problem of the OS having an error or getting a virus, or… The error gets propogated onto all drives in the RAID array, and will impact your system. I highly recommend using a automated backup tool that can do “bare metal” restores from a backup. I prefer Acronis Trueimage, but Symantec Ghost will work as well. If your Hard drive fails, all you do is put a new blank hard drive in the system, attach your backup drive, boot from the CD, and in a few hours, completely hands off, your system is fully recovered.
My Wife’s hard drive failed back in October, with over 400GB of data on it. it only took 3 hours start to finish for the full image and get up and running again without having to reload all the applictions by hand.

Oliver, you may want to go over to grc.com and buy SpinRite. It’s the only disk recovery program I know of that will recover data from the drive as long as there is nothing wrong with the hardware. It will recover unreadable sectors and will recover as much of the sector as it can even if the data is damaged. Again, it’s the only program I know of that will recover a partial sector, and sometimes this is enough to recover that sector. It only takes 11 bits in a row that is damaged to make that sector unreadable, and if you can get back the other 510 bytes that is usually enough. SpinRite also works with your harddrive to map the sectors that are getting weak and likely to fail and let the harddrive swap them out with spares. I bought it a couple of years ago even though I didn’t have drive problems, but I have used it to recover a friends laptop from the BSOD. I also use it for drive maintenance and my system doesn’t have a problem. I can’t recommend SpinRite enough.
When my drive failed I called up driversavers and balked at their prices (even student prices). Because my harddrive wouldn’t even start up when it got plugged in, my guess was that it was hard drive circuit board just burned out or something. So I went online and was able to find a replacement board for around 85-125 dollars, which did the trick. (found mine on ebay) The hard drive hung and struggled a lot while it copied all the data over to an actual bootable drive, but nonetheless it saved ALL my data. If you still have that “dead” hard drive and really want to get the data back, you basically have two options: drivesavers or replacing the circuit board. Software is kinda out of the picture if the harddrive refuses to start. period.
