Americans are just as insensitive (and yes I am American). Take a look at how political cartoonists portray public figures from other countries, or other cartoons portraying world leaders or public figures doing it with each other and even animals. We Americans are way to egotistical. Little surprise even our own allies dislike us (ask your average European what they think of Americans). We should learn to laugh at our own shortcomings.

You can’t deny Japan’s racist tendencies and xenophobic nature. You could live their your whole life, assimilate as much as possible, become a citizen, and go the extra mile to fit in but you’ll still always be that gaijin living down the block. Hell you can’t even move to Japan unless a citizen sponsors you or you manage to get a teaching visa, and after you visa expires they send you packing regardless of how long you lived there.
People wonder why much of Asia still hates Japan, just look at their history with dealing with people who aren’t Japanese. Freakin’ naicha piss me off……but I still plan on moving back to Okinawa someday.

My point is no nation is perfect, not by a long shot. When I visited Japan(Went to meet a friend in the USAF-I Know rite, an American and Russian friends??!!??) we were refused from many, many times from places. No foreigners, no white people, etc.
On an unrelated note, it was extremely awkward for him when we visited the Hiroshima memorial. We had a lot of dirty stares. I almost wanted to blurt out "Hey don't look at me, my government has only ever used nuclear weapons on our own people."

You’re right, except that it’s not precisely racism… it’s xenophobia.
Japan is one of the most xenophobic industrialized nations in the world. And you don’t even need to go there and experience it first-hand to see it — that innate tendency towards xenophobia is apparent all over the place in their ‘anime’.
Hell, it’s even apparent in their video-games. Resident Evil 4 and 5 come to mind.

What you’re describing there isn’t racism. It’s still just nationalism and xenophobia.

I saw a man thrown out of a store because he was a ‘monkey'(I am sure you get what it means). I had a couple tell me the Japanese were the greatest race and that the Chinese mongols were subhumans.
And yes, everyone knows what they did to the Chinese, and all others they conquered. The Japanese were in the top three who committed atrocities. The Germans, my former nation, and Imperial Japan. All three did things that were horrible. When the Soviet Army pushed into Manchuria and Korea, what the saw was ghastly.

ninotores: Racism is EXACTLY what happens. Ever actually been to Japan? Plenty of places that don’t even allow gaijin to enter. Then there is the way half Japanese kids are treated in school, as if they’re less of a person because they’re not full blooded. Constantly picked on and sometimes even forced to go to a school for “half kids” due to the constant harassment from classmates and unsympathetic faculty. Even the city government is inclined to give less financial aid to the “half” school on Okianwa, most of their funding comes from donations. I’ve seen it all too much for you to come in here and try and pass it off as xenophobia, that is what’s truly inaccurate. Live there and actually experience it and I can almost guarantee that you’re opinion will change.
Xenophobia is a fear of gaijins. What I’m describing IS NOT xenophobia, it’s down right racism. IMO the general consensus in Japan is that the Japanese truly believe themselves to be ethnically and culturally superior to their Asian neighbors, hence my accusation of them being racist. There is no beating around the bush on this issue.
On a side note, what do you think those extreme nationalist peach? Surly not equal treatment of all those who are non Japanese. Laws already prohibit dirty gaijin from gaining citizenship without sponsorship from a citizen. Imagine if the nationalist were in power? Hell I could even see them going as far as kicking non Japanese citizens out of the country. They want to see the days of the emperor restored and the expansion of the Japanese empire to begin anew. The same train of thought that lead to today’s underlying racial tendencies in Japanese society IMO.
Also, Japan was not as isolated as one might think. From the west yes but you do realize how close the main island is to Korea correct? IIRC Japan declared Korea an official protectorate in 1905 and had been meddling in their affairs since 1875 and before that. IIRC there were a series of invasions of Korea by the Japanese in the early 1500s. Hell, where do you think kanji (and Japanese people for that matter) comes from? I’ll give you a hint, it didn’t originate from Japan that’s for sure.
