Would you have a program to recommend, to encrypt folders ?

Hi guys,

I’m trying – without success – to find if there’s a program for my needs, I’m asking here just in case someone can help :)
I’d like to be able to safely encrypt, or lock, one or a few specific folders on my hard disks, so that nobody but me accesses them. Invisible or not, I don’t care, but not browsable.

That would be my porn collection (my first son is almost 4 years old, he’s now clicking happily everywhere, I don’t want him to stumble upon a gaping creampied uncensored pussy by accident), and a few personal files, for instance.
The trick is : if, some day, I have to reinstall my OS (be it windowsXP or Mandriva Linux, a motherboard replacement requires an OS reinstallation), the files MUST become accessible again, the protection must be easily reversible.

Would you know if a program to make it exists ? I couldn’t find it, but I risk nothing in asking ;)

Hello! This post is getting on years, so here's a friendly mention... If all the links are dead, you may try using
THE HENTAIRULES GIGATORRENT
Pick exclusively a precise file with a keyword search, or bulk leech like a madman, it's quick and easy :)

http://www.gpg4win.org/ has some components that you could use.

The simplest answer would be to use Truecrypt from truecrypt.org. I’m in the same situation (denying a little one access to my porn collection), and have been using Truecrypt for a while now. I’ve got it encrypting a 120GB external hdd and it works without a hitch. The best part is that it’s completely free, open source, and available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

=-=-=From the website=-=-=
Main Features:

* Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk.

* Encrypts an entire partition or storage device such as USB flash drive or hard drive.

* Encrypts a partition or drive where Windows is installed (pre-boot authentication).

* Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.

* Parallelization and pipelining allow data to be read and written as fast as if the drive was not encrypted.

* Provides plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password:

Hidden volume (steganography) and hidden operating system.

* Encryption algorithms: AES-256, Serpent, and Twofish. Mode of operation: XTS.

Truecrypt is really great and really simple to use.

Hi: I’m system administrator:

2 advices, you pick the one you like:

http://www.truecrypt.org/

This one is free, it allows you to create virtual disks (those can be copied like normal files)
and put all your private stuff there

The other advice:
I can teach you how to block the access to your folders using just NTFS security, you only need two user accounts, one for you and one for your son, if you are interested send me an email and i will help you (no is not that hard) the good of this solution is that when you login to your account you have access to your files with out doing anything else.

Nothing will happen if you format or move your HD to other PC.

Send me an email and i will help you if you need it.

Sorry for my english, i speak spanish.

Keep your good work.

try “protect folder plus”, it pretty much do everything: hide, browse only, read only, or even grant full access

simple to use too

Truecrypt is the most secure and the most convenient.

It works like this:

-You create a container files ranging from 1MB to whatever (let’s say 100GB+). This container file won’t have any extension and you can name it to whatever you like.

-With truecrypt, you mount the container file to a drive letter. For example: w:

-All the encrypted content in your container file will be accessible through explorer by browsing to drive w:

-And all the encryption/decryption is done in real-time, without any performance hit. Other encryption solutions will require you to decrypt the whole thing before you can access it.

Truecrypt definitely.

Just use truecrypt Oliver. I just use it and it really works for me.

Why don’t forget about encryption (which can fail and render yourself out of your own files) and plain just move your collection onto a removable drive(s), store it away when your son uses the computer & use only on your own time?
This scheme prevents 3 things:
* Hassle when upgrading hardware or changing OSes.
* No need to install encryption & risk its failure.
* No way for yer son to see it unless he finds it, mounts it and browse it.

Or use XP/Vista’s groups policies for folder access or Linux’s (your distro) user privileges and folder permits capabilities to block or hide folders or complete filesystems.

TrueCrypt is the best program for what you need. It’s cross-platform and has an absurd amount of ways to encrypt your data.

I wouldn’t suggest Truecrypt. From Download.com:

“… but make no mistake–TrueCrypt is not for the casual encryption explorer. Be sure to thoroughly understand what you’re doing with the program before you do something regrettable.”

That and when I downloaded and ran the program my CPU usage went through the roof and I didn’t even do anything.

If you have a PC then I suggest AxCrypt. Super easy to use you can encrypt a single file, batches within a single file, or a whole folder (needs to be zipped first). You can shred stuff too.

Honeyview is a good program. you right click the zip folder, then press 3 and it’ll let you view the pictures without having to unzip them. This is what i use its pretty solid.

Yellooo there im an expert at these kinds of things =D my job is a security officer… so i have to secure documents so that other people can not get ahold of them or try to modify them in any way possible there are two really good programs that i Highly recommend to you i personally use these programs on my labtop and at my workplace so that my co-workers cant modify shift reports =P lol the first one is called “Folder Guard” you can protect your harddrive, folders, internet, and even programs if nessary the other one if you really want to secure it real good is called “Lenovo VeriFace Recognition Login Interface” this program scans your face to identify you using your face as a password =D (this requires only a webcam) i hope that this information can be useful to you in protecting your files from your child =P

Personally, i use MySecretFolder.
It’s good if are talking about specific folder or drive. It doesn’t encrypt but locks the folder and require password to open it, or you can hide the folder as well and a few other useful functions.

try using fspro’s “My Lockbox” it will create a folder for you to put your collection, after that, you could “Lock” the folder (set it a password and hide it) easily reversible, and free

If you use an UNIX OS (like Linux or Mac), wouldn’t a simple chmod be sufficient ? Create an account for your son, don’t communicate your root password and make a “chmod -R o-rwx porndirectory” and your files will be readable and usable only by you (and the root). It’s a base command for UNIX but it doesn’t work for windows.

Hello!

’nuff said.

Truecrypt is what I use. Safe, secure, open source and I’ve never had a bit of problem.

I have a simple suggestion and I use this myself so i know it works. All you need is WINRAR.

Make an archive. Preferably a RAR archive of your porn.
Then change the extension from RAR to something unassigned. For example, mypornfolder.rar renamed to mypornfolder.LOL (LOL can be anything)

It works. Searches wont even see the pictures inside like they do with ZIP and RAR files.

Also you don’t even need to rename it again if you want to extract it. Winrar can extract the files even though it has that extension. Just dont use the “Open with..” so it wont be associated with winrar.

Magic Folders

You set it to hide files and folders, so no programs even recognise they exist. When you press a custom key combination you’re prompted to enter a password, and only upon entry will the files become viewable again.

I’ll just add to the Truecrypt side – it’s awesomesauce.

You can get heatseek. It makes everything in one place, and you need a password to access it. it also has alot of other features with it you may like.

Try using MySecretFolder ( http://www.my-secret-folder.com ). Makes a single folder where you have to type a password to access it. Really easy to use ^^

Soge

TrueCrypt is very good, but it might be overkill for your purposes.

If you simply want to lock/hide or password-protect the folder, you could just use Folder Lock.

Cronax
Cronax

If you hadn’t chosen it yet, go for TrueCrypt :P
Allows a great deal of security depending on how paranoid you are. What most other programs don’t do is disallow searches into it unless it’s opened, which is in your case an important part of the security. If he just types in a searchbox you don’t want him to stumble upon it either :P

Matt

Just zip it and add a password.

simple

yeah, I’d suggest using winrar to do what Matt suggested. Under the general tab, check “lock archive” and in the advanced tab click “set password” and be sure to check “encrypt filenames”. You should also set the compression method to “store” in the general tab as well.

Oliver,

Don’t know where UniveralShield (US) would stand in your specific situation. However, what I like about the program is; 1) if you don’t know to run the program the drives/folders/files (whatever you’ve locked away) don’t show up – ANYWHERE, 2) once you do run US you have to enter the password of course which just gets you to the point of being able to unlock the stuff you’ve locked up, then 3) they finally show up. Shut down having done nothing (i.e., have a crash and US locks up everything tight. Too many “Security” and “Locking” APPZ prevent access via the Explorer but open an APP and browse and you will find the folders or files. Learned that the hard way when one of my daughters “found” some of my files doing a shared files search with Microsux Windoz Media Player that were supposedly secure. Tried the same with US…nothing there…with any program I’ve tried. Problem is, it costs about $34.95 or something. But it has been worth it. NO ONE has a clue I have what I have on my drives or that the drives even exist!

oliver , i use Steganos Safe, it’s a great program that (I think) uses DoD methods of encryption.
if u want the full ([email protected]) version , i can email it for ya

if this post is a bit late, don’t worry about what i have to say, personally i find that the best way to encrypt a folder is to make a password protected disk-image (.iso usually), this is easy, no need to download software and works like a charm

the only bad thing about this sort of encryption is that you have to choose a size for the disk-image when you first create it (meaning you have to make it larger than the amount you wish to put in to it if you want to expand your collection)

so yeah, i am a loyal fan and i hope to see you continuing to make such great hentai available for free to all of us

MasterPimp
MasterPimp

Definitely TrueCrypt – all my porn is in 4 files for a total of 110GB so far… :)
One for Hentai, two for vids, one for pics :D
Just be careful not to put ni a so complicated password that you’ll forget it – because then you’ll lose everything :D

I agree with the others, TrueCrypt is the best solution for your, *ahem*, problem :D

I was going to post info an the program but it looks like that has already been done a number of times

U can try using KAKASOFT…u can download it for free on kakasoft.com

Well mabey a bit late but,you could try the free Microsoft Private Folder. You can get it at Download.com. It makes a seperate encrypted, password protected folder for you to store the files in. MS put it out a couple of years ago but almost immedietly took it back off the “shelf” because the encryption and protection were so good that, combined with the fact that they DIDN’T put in any backdoor, if someone forgot thier password they were S.O.L.

sgt otaku

I would recommend TrueCrypt. I use it to hide my hentai collection and it has a very high level of security. and i can make it appear as any type of file i want, like .exe, .zip, .rar and so on. it let’s you encrypt a full hard drive, or create a “container” for your files that mounts like a virtual hard drive, but appears as a file with any name you choose. plus it’s free, so you dont have to buy a pathetic file for strong encryption. it uses 3 different encryption algorithms, including the one the US government uses.

simple

Don’t use ANY programs for this.

you can just create a simple .bat in notepad that creates a folder, then hides it from EVERYTHING unless you unlock it with a password via a separate file that can be disguised as “settings.bat” in a program folder.

here’s how to do it:
http://www.lytebyte.com/2007/06/25/how-to-lock-and-hide-folders-in-windows-without-additional-software/

SL-Gundam
SL-Gundam

If you go to the windows control panel, and open folder options, in the tab “view” you should disable “Use simple file sharing”.

Disabling this enables the security tab in the properties folders and files. As long as your son does not work in the same windows account as you, you can block access to any folder you like this way using windows users accounts and groups. Make sure that your son does not have a administrator privileged windows account because he would be able to change the rights and get access to your folders and files

The above is based on Windows XP. Vista has the security tab on files and folders enabled by default

Oliver, heck the FULL entry here that I have made (esp the email addy) and drop me a line. I have a program you can use for FREE, and will be happy to provide you a copy of it; simple p/w protection, and NO way ANYONE can crack it.
