I always take pride in making something newbie friendly, likely to attract newcomers instead of scaring them away.
Regarding the interest of a scenario, in fact, the whole thing is biased whether this is a doujin, or not a doujin. When it’s with a doujin, it will be harder to impose something original without betraying the original plot from which the doujin is inspired, and it will be very temptating to just keep on following the tracks of the original game/anime, or to give up on any scenario because the otaks are going to buy it anyway since this is a good-looking doujin.
On the other hand, without a scenario, an original manga, even a short work, is losing half of its interest at once.
It is reflected in the average number of downloads for my shares. Of course it will greatly vary because of several factors, but from my personal experience, if a doujin with a shitty scenario has an “indexed value” of 100, then, in terms of number of downloads, it would be like that :
– doujin with shitty scenario = 100
– original work with shitty senario = 110
– doujin with a good scenario or at least something unique, well-invented, that has been highlihted : 140
– ecchi complete hentai manga with an hilarious scenario : 140 (I always hope it will make more, but no, even Yuria Volume 3 barely made a bit more)
– original work with a good scenario, magazine one-shot or manga’s extracted chapter = 170
– complete english manga with a shitty scenario = 180
– complete english manga with a good scenario = 250
– Ero-Isu = 700

Awesome post! Udon-Ya might just have the best art out there, I hope he does another tank soon, Maid Bride was way too good to stick to doujin’s!
It seems really common with doujins, that authors don’t stick with the original story and just go for: THAR IS CHARACTER NOW SHE IS HAVING SEX! It’s understandable, especially when there might not have been much story to start (has anyone actually played monster hunter what’s it about!?). Otsuka Kotora’s “Suki” (EVA doujin on here too!) is one of the best examples of putting the effort in to match the original story/characters, and it makes a huge difference in quality!
I just wish that Udon-Ya wouldn’t go “rape but not really” on all of these, I know he can do more!
