The easiest part is to give credits and thanks to Sayo and Stass. Island is a… special story, halfway between weird and creepy, toying with the male hero’s feelings things aren’t real, depicting his memory issues, throwing industrial hints of double personalities or possession, all of that in an enclosed place where nobody is the person one is pretending to be… Hey, I spend so much time ranting the mangas have no scenario, I’m not going to complain when, for once, 186 pictures don’t suffice to get the whole grip, right? |
Graphically, this is some “clean” Tuna Empire (save a dozen weird pages in the end), with happy consensual oral, vaginal and anal sex, plenty hardcore.
All in all, I’m glad I read this manga, I hope it may trigger your interest :o

Tuna Empire is the creepiest ero-mangaka I know, I can be surprised by his weird stories, not by the fact that he write weird stories.
But he's drawing is organic, with fluid lines. He really can make manga.

BTW Oliver, I remember you posting only the cover of a short full color one shot work that you said you might share (don't know if you did) under the collected works section of some artist a long while back. I can't remember the name only that the cover was nothing more than a full color japanese rural roadside or something like that, and the title's in english (travels, portrait, or something >.<)
I remember having it but can't find it on my hard drive because I forgot the artist/title lol… Wonder if you can refresh my memory if you (or anyone) recognize what I'm speaking of. I do know the artist did a bunch of full color works.

I'm glad Island is being translated. I'm not a big fan of Tuna Empire stories, nut this one is so wierd it caught my attention. You really dont know what happens : reality, dreams of the male protagonists ? And are the Lovecraftesque creatures real or only projections of the boy and the women's fantasies ?
I was like "What the fuck?" all the way through this volume, but I would be lying if I said it didn't interest me. In face, I can't wait for the next volume.

it has some of the characters (patchwork gilr etc) and the same overall mindfucking setting (cursed island, weird dreams, some crazy cult, masks, rape monsters in some deep cavern)

Most probably only heavily influenced.
Wish it wasn't quite so confusing. Weirdness is best when you have some definite reality to contrast it to. Good art and sex, especially later on (I really don't like loli).
Really werid the whole thing but nevertheless great, I liked the tanned girl (hoped for more, sex is a little bit short^^). Thanks for sharing.
