Agreed about this VS that. I have a big weakness for the tanned, light haired, strong willed girls, but they usually seem to play a sidekick role, never getting the guy. They’re there for the occasional fun on the side. Luckily, a few exceptions like Slut Girl’s Sayoko exist.

It confounds me to this day that "all-girl train" isn't somehow its own recognized subgenre of hentai.
That, googling "Ganguro girl" or checking out Jersey Shore, which is basically the same thing (there are male and female versions of them in that shit show) apparently, i.e. it would ruin your appetite and make you vomit anything inside your body just looking at them.
While I tend to agree with Oliver and the commenter here in preferring the looks of the ganguro girl, it's not like I don't understand why a Japanese reader's eyes would swing the other way.
The definition of "attractive" in different societies and groups ties into race and ethnicity, and even in the 2010's Japan is statistically a very homogeneous nation in terms of race. We could have an argument about whether that's right or wrong, but whether it is or not, it makes sense that a lot of Japanese in that environment would find their own race and ethnicity more attractive. It's not really any different from the racial segregation in the USA in the 1950s. As an outsider it's easy to look in and say "Well why don't they realize how attractive this racial outsider is", that that makes no rational effort to account for perspective.
The "disdain" on the ganguro girl is far from that. The tan is fake and they just use blonde hair color (or hair spray, or even a wig), i.e. they're pretending to be what they aren't, which goes back to my point on Jersey Shore, who based on the tvtropes article on it, is about spray-on tanned girls and guys. Race had nothing to do with this.
