You see, I was puzzled by a comment made two months ago about the high resolutions mangas, making me wonder if I didn’t misunderstand the reaction of several people against high resolution shares (cf this other poll, in which 71% of the visitors expressed interest in scaled down versions).

It makes me ask myself if I wasn’t mistaken in sometimes offering both the high res and a resized-to-average-res versions. Maybe people were after a reduction in file size (not less pixels, but less megabytes !), not after better visual comfort.

Your vote on this poll may change my sharing habits in the future, thanks if you wish to vote :)

For the persons dissatisfied with very high resolution hentai scans (3000 vertical px and above), is it because...

The file size worries me as more and more ISPs are putting caps in high speed internet connection. Some DSL lines are even being capped at 100GB…like hell >_>

Both…there is no need for high res when the images are clear. And longer waiting time for fap fuel is a no no. :))

Neither one from above. I don't think downloading not 10 min. but 30 or viewing images with a little bigger resolution is some kind of problem. The problem comes when you want to store it,it eats up too much of your HDD space. And I'm saying this even though I have 5 TB free space.

I feel bad for people with bandwidth problems. I’m moderately certain that I shift more bits in a month than all of Canada combined.

On the other hand I do have space limitations. This poor old girl is almost 5 years old. But come on, there’s always room for high-rez hentai. *ALWAYS*.

When I want to sit in my chair and say “enhance” nine times in a row I want media that’s not going to cry “pixel abuse” around magnification #4.

Because it’s worth it.

I've used Comicrack to look at my hentai for a few years now, because I can have it scale the images according to screen sive and then zoom in at 150%, so that all the images are approximately the same. Plus it's easier to manage my collection that way.

No problems here Oliver. Please continue to offer both high and medium. I hate when people bitch about options. It's an OPTION. "Oh no. I have to scroll a few lines to get to the resized version! My life is ending!" Puhlease. Deal with it people. At least Oliver even considers his commentors and provides solutions.

For me the high res version didn't actually do any better job, it all look the same with manga viewer automatically resized it to adjust my screen (I'm using laptop) so its the file size that matters. You did a good job to resize it without damaging the picture :)
I really hope you just maintain giving low res and high res ver whenever its possible to let people themself choose the option to download with.

You clearly didn't read the whole post. Nobody asked for your opinion.

For my worth, i have no problem with the second option purely because i use an image viewer that automatically sets the zoom of the image to be 'best fit to screen' such as irfanview, so even if its a superhuge picture in terms of pixels it just resizes and keeps the aspect ratio so nothing distorts. this is also useful for oldie files, where the picture is actually smaller than my current screen resolution :D This way no matter what im looking at it will fit the height (or the width) of my screen perfectly

I use a Macbook, and Preview instantly adjusts the size of the image. However, that presents the pesky problem of when the first image in the folder is the HentaiRules banner =/

So it's mainly size that's the problem. I wouldn't even argue the capped bandwidth issues so much as it is that quite a few of us don't have the luxury of subscribing to depositfiles and their ilk. Most we can afford in our day-to-days is a decent internet connection that won't fuck up on us. On top of that, the speed at the lower tier can vary considerably. One day DF is downloading at a decent clip, the next you're lucky if you get 10 kb/s. It's not bad when your file is just a one shot, but a full volume is another beast entirely.

Hello Oliver, thank you for the poll.
I am the one who get annoyed with too big res pics.
besides it's file size is too big, the picture is too big for my current monitor resolution.hehehe.

usually after I downloaded the files…I resized original resolution. it still get a good quality but less in file size. so I can store more hentai mangas in my "tiny" HDD…
hehehe:D

I checked the results first and voted for the option trailing behind. BOTH are an issue (and from the posts I skimmed before my own, that seems to be the prevailing opinion). In my case, my laptop screen resolution is 1366×768. At MOST I would be viewing a 3000 vertical px manga page at 50% resolution anyway, quite possibly at 25% if that still allowed me to read the text balloons.
These are not photograph images we're looking at here. There is only so much benefit to be had from higher resolution scans of a B&W manga page (or even a colour one). A black line on a white background can only become so sharp, even on a large monitor. I see no benefit at all to having overlarge pages, only drawbacks.

While it's interesting to ask, I'm not sure if the "why" of "are giant images a problem for you" is the most relevant question. What you want to know is would your fanbase here prefer you to limit resolutions and file sizes for their convenience, or aim for the highest resolution/filesize you can get?

I doubt going either way would stop people from downloading, but if you really want to know what the massess prefer, start posting download links for both Low-res and High-res versions for each book (for a while at least; would be a pain in the butt to do that forever). Then count the download stats. ^_^

To clarify, I can tell we don't have the same issues, you as visitors and potential downloaders, and me as a middle-man webmaster.

My issues :
– time
– TIME
– NEVER ENOUGH TIME GODDAMNIT

Your common issues
– avoiding too much bandwidth consumption
– downloading faster
– avoiding to fill up the hard disk
– reading comfortably (let's not forget most picture viewers perform a bad job at downsizing images, and what's smooth and cute may look sharpened and edgy when made to fit to screen)

Until now, facing a manga with very high res pictures :
– when I remember to do it
and
– when I have enough spare time to do it right when I think of it
I would recompress it to a medium-res version, and repack inside ONE single archive both the high res and the average res versions.

See the drawback ?
I was focusing on the visual comfort, and totally ignoring the megabytes size of the archive.

If I were to offer two separate zips, it would increase the time consumption for me, something I'm very reluctant to do. I'll do it only if it meets popular demand.

That's for the info you asked :)

I'm all in for the highest possible resolutions. Nowadays i see myself deleting and/or replacing mangas and doujins from a decade ago because back then, what was more than enough for its time, is nowadays utterly useless and disgusting to look at. Coming across a download of Ishikei's wonderful coloured doujinshi nowadays at a resolution not superior to 1000px in height would kill my boner.

One thing that more and more people are taking enjoyment from nowadays, and something i've been doing for a few years, is, with my monitor which can be turned 90º into a vertical position, and has 24'', with a resolution that becomes 1200×1920, it really becomes noticeable, that it is rescaling doujins and images that vertically are inferior to 1920px in height. Nowadays, internet speeds and HDD spaces are becoming less and less of an issue to even consider. I would say it's rather unfortunate for the folks in Australia though, for example, with their ISP's treating them like they don't deserve to :(

I have nothing against uploading the original/high resolution of the material alongside another link for the SD/low res/compressed link, but please don't kill the good quality and big size ones, for this site became one of the main places to visit which i can trust contentwise, after dealing with hentai for 14 years.

Keep up the EXCELENT work, and hentairules.net … rules!

personaly, i always batch convert all images with fastone image viewer (largest = 1200 pixels, compressed at 85% in JPEG.

in this way, it's zmooth and fasy on every platform (atom neetbooke, tablet or smarphone…)

I am very disappointed in most of you.
Just download the high rez.
My hentairules download folder isn't even 100GB yet and that includes both the zipped and unzipped of everything I've downloaded.
With todays hard drives this really isn't a problem (2TB at $70).

Also complaints about the file hosters? There are 3 mirrors for most files. What more do you want?
Just use jdownloader to automate the download process. Sure you have to wait a while if you download several large files but hey your not paying for it.

I could understand if you have some bandwith caps or your using your phone to download this stuff.
But archival space is the most pathetic excuse I've heard.

No troll wars, please. Everyone has his own reasons and motivations, neither you nor I are in position to condemn someone based on personal preferences. Acknowledging that we disagree is one thing, criticizing is an other.

But it's so much fun.
In any case the thing about jdownloader is serious.
If you don't want to wait around for the timeouts and whatever.
You might have to fill in the captcha depending what mirror you are using.
Other than that you just set it to download and it automatically waits for the timeouts and whatever.

I don't mind the size i have a FSO account and very fast connection so i didn't vote. I just don't understand why sometimes you put both high and middle size in the same zip. That seems pretty useless to me.

FYI there's a nifty piece of software named ComicRack that auto resizes pictures to fit your actual display so… For those of you that have problems with the sizes… you should give it a try.

And, thx A LOT Oliver for all the marvelous stuff you keep posting ^_^

Option 3: Download size is not a problem, i need to consider storage requirements. Since i don't really care about hi res or average res, i prefer storing average res
