The problem is that, graphically, Diogenes Club is getting better and better, and I can’t pretend I stayed cold at the sight of such a lewd teen body (plus: pigtails!

At this point, as almost every evening, I asked myself why talented artists waste so much talent in netorare, betrayal, hard rape or mind-break stories. Satisfying the part of the audience that’s too young, too covered in teenage acne or too weak to try to hit on girls is a thing (this is Tsukino Jyogi’s specialty, revengeful emokids must dig his works SO much !), but I don’t think this is enough of an explanation.
And then… I started asking myself what I would draw if I were a capable artist. A strange feeling struck me : it’s a lot of work, a page can take half a day or more to be done, and – all that for a boring vanilla plain story ?!? Damn, let’s add spice ! It’s a bit like when you play Sim City, your city develops well, and the pinnacle of your gaming isn’t when you reach a certain score, no, the pinnacle is the moment when, at last, you test your city against 5 earthquakes, 3 tornadoes and an invading UFO, and you see if it still hangs on or entirely turns to ashes (and if needed, you throw a few more earthquakes). Maybe the hentai artists are a bit like that, it’s when you destroy something that you selfishly feel everything of its – quickly fading away – beauty…

The parallel between Sim City and netorare not only holds truth for the artist, but also for the reader. At least, that is why I read – and more often than not enjoy – netorare stories. Nothing wrong with vanilla, hell, I'd pick a good and happy love story over NTR any day. Problem is: I have been reading hentai for a while now and with each vanilla story I read, the genre seems to become more dull. Regular vanilla stories just don't excite me the way they used to anymore. NTR, on the other hand, is brutal, yes, but it makes me feel… alive… if you know what I mean. Strong feelings of anger, emotional pain and distress – I like them as much as I loathe 'em.
Oh, and just so you know: I am not a weak, acne-covered teenager who is insecure around women. Hell, I am not the best-looking guy on earth, but I have more than enough confidence in myself to make up for it. And when I am with a woman, I treat her with love and respect and want to make her feel good in bed. An orgasm feels awesome, but making your partner come feels even better.
My point is: I read netorare not because I can't do bad stuff like that to women, I read netorare because I won't. Big difference.

That's pretty much my take on it. This takes place prior to the events of the actual series, in which he's still pining for the ghost chick.
So while she may still be in love with him, he doesn't notice her in that way.

So I'd argue against this being either NTR or regular cheating.
Now mindbreak, yeah.. That I can concur with, she's been fucked so silly, that she gets hooked on this guy. But that then makes her no different from the female ladies in the works by Tsukino Jyogi. Who while they may still have some emotional attachments towards an unavailable guy, have gotten hooked on another guy who does notice them.

As for the why do Mangaka's do these types of themes? Your boredom motive is probably one aspect, Oliver. However, I think that the paycheck is a bigger reason. There's a market for this, and if it pays more than the regular stuff, and you got bills to pay, what would you pick?
And it's not that easy anymore to move on from being an Ero-artist towards becoming mainstream one like a Kouta Hirano. Heck, the last one who managed to pull it off was Shōji Satō aka Inazuma, and that's in part because it's his brother who is the writer for the series.
And with guys like Governor Ishihara around, it's only going to become more and more difficult.
Which is a bit of a pity because chaps like Kimimaru or Takemura Sessyu do know how to tell a story and their art is pretty danged good too.
I couldn't have done better at explaining that fact about the plot, and yes, I think the greater part of the reason artist draw NTR is because it sells, and not as much as them liking it or feel like doing it…also because I rather be naive and believe that artists are mostly good people who, when all's said and done, are more proud of their happy-end works than the bad-end ones.

I remember searching for hentai doujins back when the awesome pure-gold anime first aired. I was sure I'm gonna get vanilla with Naruko X Jinta, and boy was I wrong. The first doujin I found turned out to be "Anal Sex" by Sanazura Hiroyuki… this present share reminded me of that feeling – not rage, just disappointment. Well whatever, thanks for that interesting insight of yours Oliver, and for sharing this despite it having a bad story.
Oh and one more thing to add: Oliver, there's always the THIRD option, if you are indeed a capable artist not bound by any limitations: to create awesome ORIGINAL storylines (Witchcraft by Yamatogawa comes to mindxD) that will go down into the history book of great hentai, while at the same time ending with a good old orgy, the panacea for all problems in the hentai worlds^_^

Well that's true, but we all know that with effort, it's not that difficult to add plot twists and character conflicts that do not fall into cliche. Story wise, we all know NTR stories are, more often than not, highly formulaic and very predictable right down to the words they use, and the only thing that prevents us from dismissing NTR as boring is our negativity bias, and that's sad. Its treating the audience as merely a bunch of reflexes, and not making an effort to make the story unique.

Quite a late visit here but I'm feeling quite … regretful at this moment. I still haven't read this Doujinshi yet. But because you guys mentioned Ano Hana so I decided to take a look at the anime.
