Finding out that she's deliberately having a sexual relationship with the same man her mother did because he's the same man her mother was sleeping with was enough to kill any attraction I may have had for her.
Evangelion is a huge mindfuck based on random garbage scenario ideas and random mythologic and pseudo-religious indeas mixed together without the slightest intent at making sense.
Let's just discard this ACTUALLY shitty story and simply enjoy the drawings.
Wow, Oliver sure's raging hard at eva…sure it's was a bad idea incorporating religious stuff and the people in the series all need psychiatrists (Hideaki Anno was afterall clinically depressed for 4 year prior to the series), but it did give us some cool mechas, and also inspired many animes after it, I'll give it credit for that. Oh, and it brought us Rei Ayanami.

This is a good thing? She's *part* of that stuff Oliver is raging at, she's the clone of the main character's dead mother, who might or might not want to bone the main character. And that's not even including the fact that she is, despite being just a clone (therefore with a different personality), actively boning his father. Ayanami is a bad thing that needs to be discarded. She brought many bad ideas to the anime world.
I'm saying it gave birth to a new archetype in anime – the quiet emotionless kinda girl, which never before appeared in anime as main characters. Eva discovered that character type as a new possibility. And bad thing or not, she was popular – very popular.
Yes, she is a flawed character fraught with complications about her origin and nature, but personally I think that kinda characters are more interesting and intriguing than boring characters with one-dimensional personality. Her being a product of cloning and brought up with the sole purpose piloting evas is immoral and unethical, but heck, this what fiction is for, to explore at a safe distance themes that are questionable IRL. In anime, adding a few shades of grey is always welcome change in my opinion.
She, and Eva, broadened the horizons of the anime world, and without landmark characters like her, the anime world today would be much less colourful and interesting. Hence, I dispute your claim that Rei Ayanami should be discarded as a inferior product of human imagination.
VVen, I might be mistaken, but I believe this archetype is much, much older than Evangelion.
I think Nadeshiko is older by a few years, and a girl going "baka baka baka" all the time, that I wanted to murder because she was precisely the silent emotionless doll type, was already in constant spotlight…
With all due respect, you're mistaken, a quick check reveals that Evangelion first aired in october 4th 1995, while Martian Successor Nadesico first aired in october 1st 1996, with a year of difference…anyhow that doesn't mean such characters never appeared in anime ever before Eva, but i think it is safe to say it is Eva's Rei that propelled that character type to unprecedented fame(or noriety).
For me, it's not so much her emotionlessness which I take issue with, since she did open up to Shinji as the series progressed, and the new Rebuild series shows that clearer than ever…what I loathe is her utter lack of self-worth, not realising that despite being a clone, she is fully human, someone who people around her care about, and as with all human life, that she is not dispensable.

The reason Evangelion is bad: It is not truly a story, but a writer's mental and emotional breakdown being told through the medium of the characters. And no, thank you. If I want to watch a breakdown, I will pick someone and go *CAUSE* one.
I'm happy to see that I'm not the only person in the world who thinks that Evangelion is a gargantuous bluff. Evangelion based doujin are great, though.
Finally one on Ritsuko, my fantasies are finally fulfilled. Big thanks to Cheppe, Sushilicious, Losstarot and Oliver for the share. Fucking makes my day.

Ritsuko is well endowed, but her personality is as sterile as her lab coat. She's very cold and waayyy too uptight and serious, so she hardly inspires passion in me, but here she's wonderfully sexy.

I've never found Ritsuko the least bit attractive. She's a fake blonde, for one thing (she dyes her hair), and I hate how her eyebrows have a different colour than her hair, as a result. I just think she's ugly, in general, and that's not getting into her faults as a character (sleeping with Gendou is plain stupid).
oh, c'mon, gendo gets all the bitches, so you can't fault ritsu for sleeping with him too.
Considering how the lot of Eva-based h-doujins feature Shinji having sex with Asuka (who's a BITCH and doesn't deserve it) and Rei (who's emotionless), a Ritsuko h-doujin is ALWAYS welcome.
And so are h-doujins about Shinji having sex with Misato, Maya (which are rarER, and Mari).
I also think Eva is pure, overrated, grade-A GARBAGE.
