Seems like there's a translation error. At first he was introduced as a cousin and then when he was doing it, he said "aunt".
Not really. Keitaro from Love Hina referred to his cousin (and the original Hina Inn manager) Haruka the same way; the reason is because she's considerably older than him, and thus proper Japanese etiquette favors him calling her "obasan" (lit. "aunt") for respect.
Of course, unlike in Motenai Girls, the Love Hina case shows us one likely problem: The word also means "old woman", which triggers Haruka's temper and causes her to react with comedic violence, before sternly telling him that he should call her "oneesan" (lit. "older sister"), which is usually used with YOUNG women (i.e. mid-teenagers to young adults) rather than mature adult women like her.
Moral: In Japan, it's better to make sure to "young-ify" a woman when you're referring to her.
