Take old Chinese mythology : the Ssu Ling, the 4 constellations, or 4 gods (alt. link) that we’ll see in Japanese mangas as Seiryuu, Byakko, Suzaku and Genbu. They may give decent shonen action, as well as mostly batshit crazy S&M as in the present case

Here, 4 girls host the spirit of these mythological creatures, in order to fight evil. Well… Except that they need to be inflicted pain by S&M before they can transform and swipe evil. And they just LOVE it. Thus, damn painful punitions follow.
While I’ll reckon the scenario is NOT crap, this was NOT pointless garbage or enraging shit, the whole manga simply left me uninterested. I tolerate soft BDSM, I don’t love torture, urgh
