Taking non-adult manga suggestions…
Guys, would you have recommendations for a LONG (finished or not) manga series, that would be available for online reading ?
Not the hentai stuff that I’m sharing here on hentairules.net, I’m talking about the non-porn stuff
I recently caught up with the latest chapter of Magi, loving every bit of it !
And here I am, now, left without any long serie to read and discover. I’m re-reading Berserk, but I’d love to discover new GOOD and LONG series to read, either finished or still ongoing…
I’m writing a bit more about it in the rest of this post, if you have suggestions, I’ll be grateful
BIG UPDATE : thanks a LOT for the suggestions, everyone !
However, PLEASE, NO NEED TO RECOMMEND STUFF THAT I HAVE ALREADY LISTED
My requirements, my tastes, are :
– not shoujo/smut/josei (well, there are a few of them that I like, like Oishii Kankei, but they’re exceptions)
– Original seinen and shonen not going the DBZ/Bleach/Naruto way (like Magi above, Akumetsu, Berserk, Vinland Saga, Gunnm…) is perfect.
– Also a lot into sci-fi (rather hard science than space opera : like Planetes, Uchuu Kyoudai, but a parody like Those Who Chase The Ageha is awesome !). Not against moving/unique stories (Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou !).
– On the rare occasion, mystery manga (like Death Note, or the mangas by Naoki urasawa) when this isn’t always the same repetition.
– Nasty liking for “all shall die” stories like I Am A Hero.
– Or crazy funny WTF fantasy (like Gintama, Binbougami Ga). Hilarious shit like GTO or Needless is always more than welcome.
– Lastly, there are “alien to real classification” series that I adore, like Hunter X Hunter, Toriko, Bambino, Yotsuba-to, Oyasumi Punpun, the mangas by Mori Kouji (like Suicide Island, Holy Land)…
See, that’s pretty varied tastes
–
Below, I’m pasting a link of all my current followed manga on batoto.net (exporting it was a pain, I tell you). You don’t need to recommend these
I don’t say I’m reading every one of them as soon as they’re released (far from it), but if they’re in my follows, that means I like them a bit, a least, and I don’t want to forget about them ^^ There must also be a few missing mangas from that list, especially the old ones, but, hey, that’s already many.

Cross Game by Adachi Mitsuru. http://www.mangareader.net/300/cross-game.html
This is one of my fav stories all time. its a slice of life mostly but volume 1 makes me cry every damn time.
Beck http://mangafox.me/manga/beck/
Again slice of life mainly but it centers around a group of teenagers that form a rock band. Need some SoD but again one of my favs.
The anime flowed better, though. But AWESOME story, sold from the first episode
Great author!
Quite a lot of manga i could already suggest are present in your list.
If you're really up for a long serie, you could try history's Strongest disciple ken ichi, quite a simple action shonen in term of plot, but pretty cool, with good drawing in term of fighting move, and a lot of humors with quite a lot of crazy characters. classic but well done.
More comedy like, there is "the world god only knows", story of a dating sims games nerd who just doesn't give a damn about the real world is forced to seduce real girl using his dating sims knowledge.
Those two are shorter : parasite/kiseiju and enigma.
The first one is a seinen with a pretty interesting plot and character evolution, it follow the story of a young man whose arm was taken over by a alien parasite.
Enigma is a mystery shonen, following several people with special power trying to escape a deadly game set up by a unknown man named enigma. It's really really fun, the characters have nice ability's, and the way they use them is clever.
World God Only Knows!! I love it! Fucking HILARIOUS.
Just going to throw out a few that I have read and enjoyed:
1. Kekkaishi
2. Rave Master
3. Rosario+Vampire 1 and 2 (still ongoing)
4. Law of Ueki
4. Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles
Dragon Quest: The adventure of DAI.
Spice and Wolf.
Happy Negative Marriage.
Nagasarete Airantou.
Sekirei.
Yomeiro Choice.
Unbalance x Unbalance.
The Breaker.
Cavalier of the Abyss.
Freezing.
Giant Killing.
Mx0.
Phantom King.
0/6.
Lovely Complex.
Bokurano.
if you're gonna put in cavalier of the abyss at least say the prequal too which is immortal regis
Nisekoi by Naoshi Komi, this artist is quite good in my opinion, and I followed his first debut in Jump, Double Arts and fell in love with it, unfortunately it was cut short at a mere 22 plus chapters. *sighs* Anyways, this is a harem love story, of course, that is full of cliches, yet somehow also incorporating the yakuza, gangsters, and high school life.
Deadman Wonderland by Kataoka Jinsei is also quite good. Ignore the horror classification, albiet it is rather filled with gore and blood, but somehow Jinsei just balances out the crushing amount of violence and tragedy with a perfect amout of hope admist the bleakness of it all! I definitely recommend these two.
Hajime no Ippo by Morikawa Jyoji, the art and story is pretty good. It has humor and boxing. It's pretty long and is still being made even though it's over 1,000 chapters.
I second that, Hajime no Ippo is very good and extremely addicting
Read The Breaker and The Breaker: New Waves, its very good, also Onepunch-Man
Onepunch-Man Seconded.
One-punch man "thirded"
One of the best mangas i've read is Vagabond and i strongly recommend that those who haven't read it, should.
The art and story of the manga is top-quality but the only downside is that it's on Hiatus at 303-304 chapters.
Dorohedoro is a unique, post-apocalyptic manga:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=209
"Full metal Alchemist" by Arakawa Hiromu, "Ubel Blatt" by Etorouji Shiono, "The Legend of Maian" by Dal Young Im, and "The God of High School" by PARK Yong-Je.
"KissxSis" by Bow Ditama. Also, for those interested in DL manga check out http://crazytje.be/
if you love berserk you'll get addicted to gantz
Ouaip, si tu as aimé Berserk lis ça :
– Ares
– Gantz
Si tu as envie de mourir de rire à chaque chapitre je te conseille Beelzebub mais le manga, PAS l'anime.
———————-
If you liked Berserk read this :
– Ares
– Gantz
If you want to lol hard at each chapter, I advice you to read Beelzebub but only the manga, NOT the anime.
I strongly second Vagabond, which along with 20th Century Boys and Berserk makes up my top three mangas of all time, other than that:.
Sazan Eyes, which is probably the best manwha I know of, why it isn't way more popular is beyond me. Thanks to very dedicated Scanlators at SazanQuest.com this has finally been completely translated for about a year now.
Samurai Deeper Kyo is also surprisingly great and, again, not as well known as I would like it to be.
Also by the same artist as 20th century boys is Pluto. Its a side story to Astro Boy, yes that manga/animie from decades ago. The plot is spun from an episode were the 4strongest robots in the world are being killed off and a robot dectective must find out who is killing them.
http://www.mangareader.net/126/pluto.html
Histories Strongest Disciple Kenichi is a good one, lots of fighting and very scantily clad ladies.
I also like Claymore. That one has a lot of action in it and an amazing plot.
KLN B)
Try “Tower of God”
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=55901
and “Centaur’s Worries”
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=63580
Both are slow but worthy.
Another recommedation I have is Monster by Naoki Urasawa. It is set primarily in Germany in the 1990's. Each and every one of the characters in it are utterly compelling, the plot is first rate and whats more it is completely finished.
The villain is a highly intellgent, utterly immoral, manipulative sociopath with the potential to become the next Hitler.
It is more than worth a read.
KLN B)
Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=824
Tower of God (A Manwha but its shounen. Ongoing)
Watashi no Messiah-sama (shounen, art is dated and shaky at times, by Minazuki Suu. finished)
Seijou Kouchakan no Jijou (whacky…shounen. Complete 1v)
Aflame Inferno (Manwha shounen. On Hiatus but its much better than most of his other work)
The Legend of Maian as suggested by omnibrahman
Yozakura Quartet (Nice artwork…shounen? Ongoing)
Blood and Steel (Manwha shounen. Ongoing)
Bokura no Kiseki (Classified as Josei but I don't see it as such… Ongoing)
Kurogane (Shounen, kendo, ongoing)
Jojo Bizzare Adventure (Its long, "ongoing" and defiantly shounen)
Oyaji (…its done)
RRR (Boxing.Done)
and even though you have it on your list… Sun-Ken Rock.
I second Watashi no Messiah-sama. Made me tear up near the end.
im not sure if this has been said as a recommendation yet, but read Denpa Kyoushi by Azuma Takeshi its a good read that i think you may find interesting
bastard

been visiting the site for awhile now and finally decided to comment on something, why not try out 'Medaka Box' there are 180+ chapters and it's still going
just finished watching the first season which is the only reason i brought it up
One of my all time faves is Psychic Academy
try Psyren (end), Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo (the same author of yankee kun to megane chan), Zero In,
High School of The Dead, Triage X, if u read Worst, try QP(end) and Crows (Crows is prequel to Worst and Qp has adult story line but both great), Hellsing (end) (same author of Drifters), Denpa Kyoushi, Angel Densetsu (end), Blade of Immortal, Dance In The Vampire Bund (by Tamaki Nozomu), Rosario + Vampire (end), Rosario + Vampire II…

Too lazy to remove the novels/stuff I know you read/don't want to read.
I'd say Full Metal Alchemist fits some of your criteria. It's a shonen but not DBZ-style, and it's sci-fi due to alchemy.
Have you ever read any of Tsutomu Niheis works? I highly recommend you to read at least Blame! from him. Biomega and Sidonia no Kishi are good too.
As Killy (lol) said, Blame is a good one.
lilim kiss, bitter virgin, lets see here more Akarui Sekai Keikaku, aphorism, change 123, code breaker (long running), Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge, DCD, Denpa Kyoushi, GE – Good Ending,Happy World, hetakoi, Holy Knight, Iris Zero, kissxsis, Kimi no Knife, Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (original), Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei same as the one before but from another perspective), Mayo Chiki!, Mx0 (a must read), Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou, Mysterious Girlfriend X, Omamori Himari, Prison School, Real PG, Shinigami-sama ni Saigo no Onegai wo, Sundome, Tokage no Ou(warning the 2 volumes worth of reading is currently just the prolougue), Tora Kiss – A School Odyssey, Trinity Seven: 7-Nin no Mahoutsukai (awesome main character), Umi No Misaki, World Embryo, XBlade,Yumekui Merry, Zero In, Zettai Karen Children, and Zombie Loan. I didn't say some of the ones that were already mentioned and tried my best using a list of mangas I like which can all be read at kissmanga.com
i suggest
SHINGEKI NO KYOJIN (horror, tragedy)
MONSTER MUSUME NO IRU NICHIJOU (comedy, harem, monster girls)
SEXLESS FRIEND (romance, ecchi)
AKAME GA KIRU! (action, adventure, romance, tragedy)
THE BREAKER (martial arts)
THE BREAKER: NEW WAVES (martial arts)
all except "THE BREAKER" is incomplete
i strongly recommend "SHINGEKI NO KYOJIN" and "AKAME GA KIRU!" i personally hate tragedy mangas but these 2 are an exception.
AKAME GA KIRU! isn't complete tho
all mangas mentioned above are incomplete except "THE BREAKER"
I'll second Hajime no Ippo, Vagabond and Monster
salut
i love a lot of the previous recommandations but i'm a lot in the webcomics now, specially from egscans.com, but you can read it on batoto too…
City of Darkness (great chinese comic),
Feng Shen Ji (great chinese comic),
Wake Up Deadman,
Girl the Wild's,
Tower of God,
Trace (Rose arc is one of the best thing i ever read)
And some classic mangas :
Ichi,
Green Blood,
Kokou No Hito (finished)
One of my favorite mangas already recommanded, the first one from Claymore artist : Angel Densetsu. FIrst volumes are poorly drawn but then it's just really good and funny.
If you appreciate Suicide island, there's Holyland (finished) on batoto by the same author.
And if you really run out of ideas, just look at http://mangatraders.org/. They do 4-6 recommandations per month, with sometimes really old good mangas.
just some more :p
Eden: It's an Endless World!
and All Rounder Meguru from the same artist,
Hinamatsuri (new funny manga)
and already cited:
Monster
Vagabond
Full Metal Panic series
Try Gantz It's reaching the end and it's filled with a good number of Risque parts
Damn Oliver, half of your examples of the genres of manga you like are my personal faves!
If I suggest any you have read already, sorry, sue me, I forgot the entire contents of that list.
Hellsing is always good. The mangaka got his start doing Hentai, actually.
As previously stated, Vagabond and Monster are damn good. Vagabond has some good action and reflection upon humanity, and Monster is a great thriller.
Sanctuary is a Yakuza/Political thriller, pretty good, I'd say.
A Fairytale for the Demon Lord isn't long, but has great art and almost no dialog, and pulls it off stunningly.
Ares is good, and has rather peculiar art.
Ookami no Monshou is by the same group as Akumetsu, and while it made me rage, it is a good and tragic story.
Psyren is one of my personal favorite super-powered action mangas, along with Trace (technically a webtoon) and Trace 1.5
The Breaker and The Breaker: New Waves are good action "martial arts" stories.
Shin Angyo Onshi is historical fantasy set in Korea, and develops the plot quite well. And tragic!
Kekkaishi is a nice one, if I remember correctly, about Japanese magic and demons and things, with a rather touching end.
Claymore is fun.
Sun-Ken Rock? Can't imagine you haven't read it yet, as it is one of Boishi's most successful works.
Deadman Wonderland, nice and dark with a touch of Shounen Hero, creates an interesting mix.
Bokurano. Read it. Just do it man.
I think that is a good To Read list right there.
Did I miss any?
OHRIGHT HOW COULD I FORGET.
Akame Ga Kiru (or Akame Ga Kill)
and Fullmetal Alchemist, one of the most emotionally mature Shounen I have seen.
And Hoshi no Samidare. Good one there.
and Priest, although it ended prematurely, is lots of fun. Bloody, gory, blasphemous fun.
and Tower of God if great fun too.
yup, Priest it a shame that it ended that way
I know it’s old, but an absolute must-read:
Battle Royale
Extremely close to the novel and 100 times better than the movie.
I second this !
Prism by Higashiyama Shou is the cutest thing in the world, unfortunately no longer continued.
Emma by Mori Kaoru is one of my favorites ever, her newest Otoyomegatari is really unique too.
The ones I'm currently following:
Aku no Hana (insanely awesome)
Tower of God (look at season one and you are SOLD)
Bright World Project (no idea where this is going)
Nisekoi
The World God Only Knows
To Love-RU Darkness
Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou

Sore wa Totsuzen, Unmei no Aite ga
Sekine-kun no Koi (this is genious josei)

– Carnivorous Princess Yegrinna – The animal kingdoms princess is sent to turn all the humans into animals because they are "evil". She decides to learn more about humans first.
– Ubel Blatt
Few chapters (but worth mentioning):
– Inherit the stars – Sci-fi story that revolves around solving the mystery of a man in a spacesuit found on the moon and dated to be 10000 years old. Loved the book and the manga doesnt seem to deviate too much from it.
Mirai Nikki (you most probably have watched the anime, and it follows the manga quite faithfully)
Otogi Matsuri (typical shounen, kind of like MX0)
Ruka to Ita Natsu (tragedy romance and science fiction. Great read, but on hiatus..)
Cradle of Monsters (survival horror genre, involves zombies)
Eden no Ori (english name: Cage of Eden) survival horror. harem and romance
EX Shounen Hyouruu (again, survival horror and romance subplot)

Manhwa:
– Island
Not possibly match but good:
– Gold Digger
– Usagi Yojimbo
– All from Jiro Taneguchi
I'd definitely second Usagi Yojimbo and Gold Digger, but no one seems to have mention my favourite at the moment: Bakuman (plus Is and Video Girl Ai).
Bakuman was good, but the ending is really shitty IMOH. It ends too abruptly, it should’ve continued even past them getting married (if you even say that’s a spoiler, you obviously never read Bakuman as it’s the whole reason either of them started).
As a suggestion, you should check out Koe de Oshigoto. It’s what Bakuman would be about if it followed Miho and was an ero-voice actress.
You're right, I've not read the whole of Bakuman, mostly because Viz have yet to finish the run
Lis Jojo's bizarre adventure, sérieusement la plupart des manga qu'on peut lire de nos jours dans la catégorie shoen/seinen en sont amplement inspiré l'ami
Check out The Five Star Stories. a truly epic sci-fi manga that's been going on since the 80's.
Arpeggio of Blue Steel (Aoiki hagane no arpeggio) is another brilliant sci-fi manga about WW2 battleships suddenly returning and taking over the control of the seas.
Ubell Blatt is a good seinen action manga.
A Fairytale for the Demon Lord, short, beautiful and will leave you thoroughly feeling mindfucked.
the only ones I can think of that arnt on your list are Pandora hearts, and d. grayman. both have awsome art, they also take place in more of a alternate past were supernatural stuff exists.
Also history's storngest diciple is pretty funny.
I havent read much manga since onemanga (I think thats what it was called) was shut down.
Shigurui
Wolf Guy – Ookami no Monshou (MUST READ)
Eternal Sabbath
Monster
Not only Vagabond but practically anything by Takehiko Inoue. He makes incredible Manga. Since Oliver shared Hajime no Ippo once, I think he already read that one. (In fact thats how I came to read it).
Action-wise I recommend Breaker and if you haven't read it Full Metal Alchemist. A bit of romance with "Orange-yane no Chiisana Ie" or a bit of alternative with "Ressentiment"
You read too much, most of the ones I could recommend seem to already be on your list. However, a few that might or might not be to your liking that I could at least suggest you look into are:
Elfen Lied – Sure, the art's adequate at best, and really silly towards the beginning, but it's got some pretty dark themes, suspense, tear jerkers and some comedy thrown in every now and then. With 109 chapters, I'd consider it long enough to meet at least that requirement.
Monster – I must say I haven't read this, rather watched, but to my knowledge the story doesn't derive much or at all, so I'll name it anyway. It's got that golden oldie feel about it, and like EL, it has a thing for playing around with your emotions a bit.
The When They Cry series, aka Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni & Umineko no Naku Koro Ni – I'll admit this one can be WEIRD. I confess I have mixed feelings about Umineko, the concept isn't bad, but it can be really hard to follow. To note; both series are composed of several miniseries, drawn by different mangaka, so it can be a bit of a bother to hunt them all down (especially in the correct order). However, once again, there's an air of well-mixed horror and lighter elements, and a story that I at least enjoyed.
Usagi Drop – A break from the horror/psychology theme I've got going, it's almost soap opera-like manga, but feels more real. A quick summary would go: A 30-something-year-old man Daikichi adopts his grandfather's preschooler daughter Rin and struggles to become a good parent for her. It's one of those DAWWWW-inducing feeling ones, but fair warning: the post-timeskip later part has been known to infuriate some readers, and for good reasons. Overall this one is somewhat short, though, especially if you choose to avoid the later part (~25 to ~50 monthly chapters, says my memory).
Usagi-drop is awesome.
Whoops, forgot one:
Pandora Hearts – Again, dark, light, interesting. More twisting than even a hardcore S&M nipple fetishist is comfortable with.
Lots of good stuff mentioned above. I second Dorohedoro, It’s good and slightly twisted in a good way.
One which I didn’t see mentioned is Otoyomegatari which is a very good slice of life mange set in central Asia. It’s mostly about the characters everyday struggles but the rumbles of the Great Game between the UK and Russia are ever present in the background.
Sci-fi wise I don’t think anyone has mentioned Sidonia no Kishi yet. It’s by the same guy who did Biomega and Blame! with the same excellent art but with a slightly more penetrable story.
Arata Kangatari is a good shounen fantasy which you might want to check out.
More mainstream wise you also have Toaru Kagaku no Railgun and Toaru Majutsu no Index which again I haven’t seen mentioned.
And yeah, if you like “Maoyuu Maou Yuusha – “Be mine, Hero” “I refuse”” Spice and Wolf would probably be right up your alley. I wouldn’t mind a couple of pointers to a couple more of those kinds of manga.
try "the breaker" and the sequel "the breaker new waves"
