Question for Oliver:
I just made this intensedebate account but I've been browsing HR since 2008, and I've always liked the way you run the site. I've noticed that every once in awhile you change your download mirrors depending on what works and what gets you paid (perfectly understandable), but for the most part all posts for the last two years or so have had 3 mirrors; depositfiles, uploaded, and rapidgator.
Unfortunately, uploaded and rapidgator have always been very slow here in the US, at least in my experience, and lately depositfiles seems to be slowing as well (depositfiles used to average about 150 kb/s, now all three average between 15-45 kb/s for me).
I've read your explanation of why you choose certain mirrors and avoid others. I get the idea that this site is more of a hobby for you than anything and you would prefer to get 'beer money' as you call it, out of running the site, so your answer to different mirror requests is fairly automatic by now.
BUT I have found several posts, from 2009-2011, for which you used different mirrors, which are both still up and provide much faster dl speeds than the 'big three' used now.

Again, I've read your post explaining mirror choice before, so I', not asking for mediafire or rapidshare or crockotec. My question is, would it be possible to use these faster mirrors (filefactory, filezy in that 2011 post, cant remember others off hand) as well as the usual 3? Like have 5 mirrors for every post, instead of the usual 3? The way HurpDurp does, when he posts movies/audios?
Having no experience with file hosting (or running a blog) I'm not sure how much more work that could potentially be for you, or how much more time that could take. So I understand if this is too much to add. But if at possible, using more mirrors would make your blog much easier to keep up with

Hm… that IS a problem, since DF is the only [semi] reliable mirror here in the US. As I said before, uploaded and RG max out about 50 kb/sec, and then I have to wait 2-3 hours to use them again, DF downloads quicker and can be used more often, but apparently doesn't help anyone.
Hm, what to do =/
I see 3 options
– you use Tor until you appear like a non-American, but that means you'll be clogging the Tor network for less than legit resources. Ideally, Tor serves higher ideals
– you find yourself a proxy making you look like an European or a Russian. Some free proxies exist, their quality vary.
– you find yourself a VPN making you appear to belong from another place. VPNs are paying services, but maybe if you've got a friend with a dedicated server hosted outside of USA he could set it up for you.
Oh, lol, 4th option, you buy a premium, that must be DF's main idea, if they serve Americans they're making them pay money
Paying premium to DF still wouldn't help you if the person buying it is an American :V
Failing you start using some of the sites I use now, the only way to support *both* of us is to use Uploaded, really. That includes buying premium accounts, I've had a few and you get like 75% of what Uploaded gets :V
If he – an American – uses DF, neither of us make anything off of it (but as an American myself, I can't make anything off it in the first place) and if he uses RG I can't make anything off it because they only use Webmoney – which I still don't know if you're even able to get money from, Oliver >_>
As for using TOR or a proxy: wat. Neither of those are viable because 1) it'd be slower than shit 2) everyone already uses them already, so you wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell not getting an error message about how you've exceeded your allotted bandwidth usage.
I don't get mat at not getting money from americans, you know, it's not the end of the world. For me, a worst case scenario is a file host shutting down and all the links dying at once. I'd rather be confident these file hosts don't ever close down :-/
I once got dollars from webmoney to my bank account, by bank wire, but what I had not planned would be that my bank would impose on it fees amounting to a total of 34€, nulling most of the money in the process ^^ Now that I know it works, I can be patient.
A proxy can work if it's not a big popular one. Or even better, if you've got a friend setting up a proxy for you.

The only way to get a proxy that would work would be to pay for it, and it'd still be slow as fuck. Your best bet is either getting an ul.to account or finding some sort of premium link generator online.

On my server, hidden in a subfolder of a small website, I have a simple surrogafier-stuff-.php that acts as a proxy when I need it, and it's very fast. Which is not a surprise, I'm the only user and it can use all the spare resources on my server
But, really, as a visitor, the best for him would be buy a premium at a file host, and there, he'd be done.
