Do you know about Patreon ? I discovered it can also be used to support scanlation groups !

Hi everyone :)

On Oppai-Scans’ website, I discovered they have a Patreon page. Me : wut ?!? :wtf:

So far, I knew Patreon was a platform allowing internet people to back up creators like Zach Weiner from SMBC (here are some examples of his comics : #1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
The “patrons” decide to give every month a certain sum of money to the person they want to support, even small bits, and in exchange, the creator rewards them (for instance an ads-free website, comics in advance, or they’re allowed to watch live drawing sessions), or the creator may even offer nothing in exchange, and simply collect the donations from people who want to show they love what he/she is doing.

… And then I found, with Oppai-Scans, that Patreon is allowed for adult activities. As long as, on the Patreon page and on the main page of the website of the creator, there are no big pictures of dripping vaginas with “OMG I WANT TO MAKE YOU MASTURBATE” bolded texts everywhere.
Patreon for hentai scanlation groups ? It would be allowed !

With Paypal refusing to allow payments for porn sites/persons, Patreon could be a worthy solution, don’t you think ? I don’t say it would allow to earn lots of money of course, but maybe it can be a useful bonus to cover server fees, buy comics, stuff like that ?

Well, I posted the information, and now, it’s up to whoever is interested to read more if you want :)

Update : while I’m at it, dear fellow hentai lovers, do you know about Project-H ?
They’re a hentai publisher, with a passion for their work, and they offer tons of translated and decensored hentai mangas, on paper, and in digital format. You can buy the comics, for real, and it supports the hentai artists. It’s been many months I want to write a full post about them, with details and all (because they’d deserve it), and I always forget. I still intend to write this post, but in the short term, there, at least, I mentioned them here ;)

Oh man… Thank you Oliver for the Project-H link. I browsed their catalog and viola, something I've been meaning to see in English but didn't have the funds to commission the whole book. Again, thank you!

Which one was that?

And I wish people would put scans of Project-H's stuff online <_<

Ryoh-zoh's Love to Like and he's other works. There's also Hazuki Kaoru's.

I'll see what I can do about posting scans. They offer digital copies, big plus for me since I don't wanna deal with shipping cost and all.

The quality of the digital ones seem to be very bad, as Flammz actually bought one once and gave me a copy.

Also, they have DRM. Do you know how to get around that?

How bad is bad?

I'm afraid I won't be of any help when it comes to DRM. Someone else has to do it for me.

Digital Project-H = 1200px pdf as far as I know. Low-ish quality. You can use some pdf ripping tool to rip out the images. You could ask for help or look up how to rip things on e-hentai forums I suppose. Or contact someone like Lord of Evil who rips tons of stuff.

:| That is pretty low in terms of image size. I'll ask around when the time comes.

Just from my end – can't recall why I went in this direction, but all H-material I've acquired (whether from Hentai Rules or elsewhere) to my personal collection, I've exported to PDF's – whether one-shots or series. I admit the export process is a tedious one – at this time, I'm going after Volume 5 of "Ring x Mama" – and, IIRC, the resolution size of pages in my "home-made" PDFs is 1200×1200, so that it is possible that, in my case, Project-H's digital format could work for me.

Worth checking out.

Errr… Glad for you guys who discovered project-H, but, maybe, you could, something like, NOT share the totality of their catalog for the whole world to download for free ?

Hyperbole aside, my aim is to help them grow, ensuring the westerners enjoy more hentai in the end, with the artists realizing it's possible to please that market and earning more money from this (and, also, realizing that the more censorship there is, the less chances they have to sell).

How to say… a bit of responsibility ? Just a bit, maybe targeting someone else, or not gnabbing too hard at the last alive hentai publisher…

Apologies Oliver. Of course. Feel free to delete my comments.

I'm not all for deleting comments. There's this thing called freedom of speech, and with what you said, I don't see a valid reason to censor you :)

I forget all the details right now (and someone feel free to correct me if I err), but IIRC, Soba-Scans (who gave us the English translation of "Ring x Mama" and other works) had another series they were translating acquired by Project-H.

Don't profess to know exactly how it all works, but I volunteer that perhaps this is one way that we who want h-manga and h-doujins can still acquire them, especially if now the majority of the scanalation community are worried about DCMA and like issues.

Just a quick comment – might have more to say on it another time.

When Project-H licensed Velvet Kiss, Soba got out of the business and went legitimate to work on the volumes with Project-H. After they were done, they were done. None of them have done anything else other than that AFAIK.

And, no, not really. This doesn't help with the DMCAs at all. It's like less than 0.00000000000000000000000000001% of what we lost. Not to mention, most things weren't from tanks and won't be in tanks for a long, long time. Just look at out how long it took for Napata's first book to come out (which isn't licensed). Have fun waiting at least 5 years for the next.

IN-teresting.

Re: Soba-Scans – without looking up any remnants of their website or blog, I'm only speculating right now that, if they chose to call it a day (as HurpDurp) indicated), it may be because there were at the time numerous other groups who, if any of them so decided, could fill any void created by their absence.

As to what has been "lost", each of us might ask for themselves whether anything has been lost or merely delayed in its reaching audiences outside of its originally-intended market.

There's a lot more that can be said, but I leave that for another time.

People who like loli and/or incest will never have it again if scanlation stops. Neither of those will ever be officially licensed or translated. Doubt stuff that isn't vanilla will get done, either. Maybe some, but not as many as now.

THAT would constitute a tragedy if it meant no more material from folks like Arsenal, Yuzuki N Dash and Akari Tsutsumi – those who may be classed as "Gods of Wincest" o.0

And nobody reacting about patreon.com ^^

I still hope, though, that the news may reach and, who knows, interest some scanlation groups :)

I'd suggest you read the patreon.com FAQ page, and search for the word "adult", you'll see how and why this is legal :)

Adult has nothing to do with it. I was referring to the fact that he is asking for money to translate, edit and distribute manga online. Which is illegal.

Ah, I didn't see your point of view. I viewed that as an incitative, something like that. That team is ALREADY working on releasing volume after volume, so they're not new at it.

HurpDurp

Yeah, but asking money to do it is new and against the law.

I’d be seeing it as a wrong formulation on their end, though. “If you give money, we’ll do that, but actually, we’re already doing that without you giving money and we’ll continue if you don’t give money anyway” might have not sounded sexy enough.

How to say it, if other persons read it too… They weren’t forced to offer that kind of incitative, they would have simply said “we’ll send you naked selfies of HurpDurp with his renowned pink flashing LED nipple pasties, or, if we don’t have these anymore, you’ll receive our long-lasting gratitude”, I guess…

About funds/donations, why don't you use bitcoins or other digital currencies. Most pornsites are already accepting bitcoins. It's the next big thing.

From a personal point of view, I wouldn't dare to have money in bitcoins. The fluctuations are SO huge, it's SO unpredictable. The only sane way to use it would be to convert it back to real money at once.
But maybe that's because I'm too conservative as a person, with a certain degree of aversion for risk…
