Hi everyone, if you won’t mind, I’d like to bother you with two questions :)

The first question is “would you understand the meaning of the song Promised Land, by Avantasia.
The second question is a Linux question, about mysql configuration being refused on service restart.
Thanks if you can help, and no worries if you don’t want or can’t help, these are trivial questions ;)

– quick update, the Linux question is solved, many thanks, I’m grateful ! :woot:
But the Metal song is still on, and as long as it’s not death metal in which the singers stop using a normal voice, I’m all ears for power/speed/whatever well played quality metal recommendations ;)

First : would anyone understand the meaning behind the lyrics of this song, Promised Land, by Avantasia ?
The lyrics are vailable HERE.

For the background info, I’ve recently discovered Avantasia recently, and I’m really enjoying what I’m discovering. And, among their songs, the one that I really adore is that one, Promised Land :) And, with great apprehension (I’m always horribly afraid of being disappointed by a song’s lyrics, this is why I prefer tunes in English to tunes in my mother tongue, by default I listen to human voice as if it was any other musical instrument, conveying emotions, expressing the voice of the soul but not necessarily precise words), I finally sought this song’s lyrics… And ended up not understanding the gist of it. At first I imagined it was a mortal talking to god because he disappointed him, but, no, maybe then talking to Lucifer (it’s especially visible in a Jorn Lande version, there are two protagonists speaking, this is a dialogue, NOT a monologue) but, no, then, talking to who, another human, or, what else ? Argh.

And even more generically FYI, I want to bash myself, I mostly steered away from metal music for two decades because I believed it would be “too much” for me. HAH! Now I know where the real musicians and singers were hiding.

The heavy tunes of Black Sabbath, the speedy power of Dragon Force, the “almost non-metal, but still” of Avantasia, the weird style of Edguy, And Helloween, Mago De Oz, Sonata Artica, Lujuria, Iron Maiden, Stratovarius and all these others… RHA.
My life may be sucky because of work and family issues (not sure you noticed I’m sharing less works per day ? That’s because I forgot what peace of mind and spare free time mean), but, at least, I’m discovering whole new musical continents, and the exploration is incredibly pleasant :)

*

Second : This time, it’s for Linuxians ^^
– UPDATE, that one is FIXED ! :D I renew the expression of my gratitude for the kind help ^_^

I have a very minor, and really nonimportant issue with something. I don’t need to have it fixed, but, well, if you would understand what went wrong, and how I can fix it, I’d become a bit less stupid while reading your explanation, and that’d be great too ;)

I explained everything in details HERE, in a pastebin :)

Try the buffer value in a full number instead of "256 M"
Try the value at 268435456

Did you start with Avantasia's "The Scarecrow"? Those albums (& "The wicked Simphony") form "The Wicked Trilogy"

Have you ever read Goethe's "Faust"?
The song tells the moment where the scarecrow (Sammet) realizes that the path offered by Mephistopheles[?] (Lande) is useless and that it will only condemn him

I humbly confess I didn't imagine they were all a single story O_o

Gonna relisten to it all, CHAAARGE !

Remove the space from between 256 and M.

"innodb_buffer_pool_size = 256 M" => "innodb_buffer_pool_size = 256M"

That. And the useless space before the M unit.

I want to bang my head against a wall. That was it.

Well, thanks guys. Really, I mean it ! :)

Jul 3 09:33:47 ns316123 mysqld: Unknown suffix ' ' used for variable 'innodb-buffer-pool-size' (value '256 M')

That's the problem. Either Yvan or dreadwingknight's solution should work.

I got the feeling it was the God talking down to human rather than vice versa…

Still hard to tell, as this is a dialogue, not a monologue. Argh, gonna re-listen to the whole CD ^^

Well, hentai webmasters have better love linux, yeah. I toyed around linux between 2000 and 2005 (Mandriva Linux, does anyone even remember this distro existed ? I BOUGHT their DVD to support them, old times), returned to windows because I was fet up with the x.org prompt instead of visual login gui every now and then, and returned again to dealing with linux/php/sql, for webmastering. I love it, although I'm still learning, day after day.

So you are in to power metal? Some other bands you might like are: Blind Guardian, Rage, Hammerfall, Nightwish, ReinXeed, Sinergy, Timeless Miracle, Freedom Call, Angra, Dragonland, Axxis, Ayreon, Dark Moor, and Lost Horizon

As long as the singers use their voice and don't try to imitate a regurgitating grizzly bear, yeah, I'm into that.

I'll check these out, thanks Marc ^_^

A metal band suggestion from me is Alestorm.

As for the meaning of that song, what if there is no meaning and it’s so vague just to make you think they are saying something deep and meaningful?

That's why I sought the lyrics, I have the very strong impression these lyrics are worth it and convey a meaning…

Hey man how about Lamb of God, Symphony X, Dublin Death Patrol, 3 Inches Of Blood..
some old school like Diamonhead, Judas Priest, Pantera, Sacred Reich, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus or if you like more melodic something like Epica or Japanese metal like Maximum the Hormone or Sex Machineguns there's also an argentinan band (disbanded) called A.N.I.M.A,L

Other bands that I like:
Trivium,Avenged Sevenfold, Black Tide, Danzig, Dark Tranquility Project, Deep Purple, Van Halen, Diamond Head, Dio (both with Black Sabbath or as a band), Hatebreed, Machine Head, Manowar, Mastodon, Megadeth, Metallica, Ministry, Motorhead, AC/DC, Testament, Ozzy Osbourne, Devildriver

well just a few that I like.. about the song well not a fan of Avantasia so my input will be preety useless since I don't know the song though I'd recommend listening to the whole album without the random function and reading the lyrics, it probably makes sense that way that's how I listen to Symphony X usually these songs are written as a whole story

Ah, I know four of them, Deep Purple, Van Halen, AC/DC and Black Sabbath :D

I'll put the others to my "to listen to" list, thank you :)

Oh, please, none of them are death metal, with the singers yelling in an artificial hoarse voice not looking like human timbre, right ? I can't bear this style, and sometimes it's a pity, when the music's good, and suddenly you hear someone starting singing, and it puts everything to waste :(

Well exodus (mostly the old stuff are like this so don't listen to that) hatebreed, lamb of god, trivium and devildriver you will have to listen and judge by yourself they are kinda gutural but not death metal like its called groove metal, not totally clean voices but not really death metal like (Im not intot DM either)

Also from Avengend Sevenfold avoid Sounding the Seventh Trumpet it's hardcore and you won't like it

About DM yeah I totally understand you, I really like hardcore full speed music but when they start singing it's like a big wall of disappointment..

Pantera has IMO one of the best voices of metal (Phil Anselmo) but his new solo stuff are a total mix of punk/deathmetal/and something that i dont like so listen.

ehh I meant don't listen to that (final paragraph)
