A quick thought about the ehentai purge

(If you don’t see why I’m writing this, then don’t worry about it. That’ll spare you a lot of headaches.)

I’ve read TONS of drama yesterday about the e-hentai purge, as, I learned, tons of contents were disappearing from there. It’s true it sucks, and it makes Fakku take blame while they’re mostly not deserving this (I wrote about this in a comment @ gteam). I don’t have the time to write a lot of stuff on it.
So I’ll just ask one question.

First, the context. In the USA, pirating movies and music is punished by gigantic penalties and prison sentences, and the MPAA AND RIAA are spending dozens of millions of dollars every year to track piracy, while studio and labels also spend millions in lawsuits.

The question, now. Pardon me (silly me, I have forgotten), on what date has movie and music piracy ended ? What year and month was it, already ?
And on what date, following this, has the offer for pirated movies and discs ended ?

I could also take the non-adult manga scanlation scene, I’m not sure I noticed many scanlation teams shutting down and the scanlation scene dying.
Maybe we’re just facing a megaupload-type panic, but eventually the contents are back online and available again, while teams may lose heart and give up, but others will rise up, maybe less professional, but still enthusiastic and motivated.

Guys, no panic. Shitty or not, we only got one life, and it’s lived one day at a time.

I have also seen a lot of antisemitism today, and that is as bad as the rest of the dramas. Why not fucking leave religion out of our lives ? Seriously ? Unless you show me a religion whose motto is exclusively not to be an asshole, let's toss religion fucking aside. Jews, muslims, catholics, worshippers or haters of the worshippers, just fuck off.

From my experience, the anti-semitism is not so much religion (in the US and most of the internet) as it is being anti-ethnic. The idea is that the Jewish community are quote "money grubbing whores always out to get all your money". It's just that the ethnic group happens to share a common religion.

Figured it would be best to clear up your confusion.

Hmm, you've got a point, targetting an ethnic group, but I'll disagree, still.

Blaming the religious-practising jews or the money-grabbing-jews-with-a-long-crooked-nose, based on what they look or how they pray, that's as bad…

Not saying there aren't jew assholes being motherfuckers putting mankind to shame. But that's not because they're jews. And, damn, there's strong competition on the assholes putting mankind to shame front :(

Oliver, you seem to be under the assumption raws will halt. That will likely not be the case. They might be a bit more difficult to acquire, but that's about it.

The problem is that most scanlators/scanners/hosts/etc are pussies and don't wanna go to prison. This includes Tenboro and even myself.

A good majority of them live in places where doing this is a crime, and could end up with lengthy prison sentences or hefty fines. Just because it hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. There just wasn't any company with enough power to prosecute anyone before. Now that Wani has personally entered the market themselves (via this so-called "Jewcob" individual), it's highly probable they will start sending out lawsuits.

So here's what likely going to happen: Most scanslators will drop all Wani related projects (most already have), as there's no easy method to share stuff anymore. A lot of people probably don't even know how to get scans other than exhentai anyway. There's still p2p like torrents, Share, Perfect Dark and WinnY…

Other companies will see the ripple this had on us, and likely follow suit (one already has by licensing a magazine publication to Project-H as well) demanding removal of all their publications everywhere on the Internet. Scanlation will die.

Eventually everything will just be repack from some official translator, like the majority fansubs have become because of Crunchyroll. Stuff that isn't licensed will go untranslated forever.

An aside: The only reason people hate Jacob is because he can't into PR. He says one thing, then does another entirely different thing. Although he didn't do the Wani raid 2.0, he most likely caused it by revealing the Sekrit Sekrit Klub to Wani.

Edit: Just noticed this isn't "live" yet. Oh well.

Can't you really drop the "jew" thing ? Seriously ? Is that part of Jacob's identity, a defining feature ?
If he were a muslim, would you call him suicidebomber-cob ?
Assuming it's not rampant antisemitism but just using one's religion for joking : although it sucks, in today's society, joking with religion like that only makes things worse.

In my eyes, that will not kill scanlation, maybe only make it less professional and less organized. Look, crunchyroll is a recent thing, but, still, has it put an end to scanlation ? See the idea ? There will ALWAYS be people willing to work on contents even though they're pirated and there are angry publishers.

HurpDurp
HurpDurp

Crunchyroll didn’t kill scanlation because Crunchyroll has nothing to do with manga.

Also, the “jew” comment has nothing to do with the fact that he’s a Jewish. They’re calling him that because of the stereotypical joke about how jews are money grubbing. It’s just a coincidence he’s actually Jewish, and truth be told makes it even more hilarious since >such stereotype >much truth

Disagreeing, as there were removal requests from publishers after series got crunchyrolled.

But I really miss the time to make it a long debate, I'll revamp a bit my original post and publish it in the next minutes, as I painfully scrapped enough time for two shares. Damn, I really wish I had more spare time :(

No, I actually based it off your appearance and name. You legitmately look like an Irish Jew to me.

It’s not like it changes the fact people are calling you it because of the whole money grubbing aspect and nothing else. Also, if you just embrace it people will probably stop calling you it. It’ll become significantly less funny at that point.

Erm, Hurp…

Although I resent the non-intentional influence Fakku has had on the hentai scanlation scene (read my long comment on Gteam for details, not enough time right now, to put it very shortly I feel they have added lots of fuel to the fire, and they made us pirates BAD guys instead of merry grey zone lurkers), I reckon it's still good for the hentai artists, aren't the the most deserving ones, after all ?

In this regard, it's not fundamentally bad that new money-making opportunities appear for those people.

And, since middle-men are required for this, if Jacob is not among these middle-men, it will be someone else. So, why not him, eh ? Yeah, there's lots of money implied, it's a brand new market. It's not a crime.

Yeah, and we're going to keep doing it as long as we possibly can because we don't fucking care about being moral or selfless or whatever the fuck you're on about. We want content, the content's there, we take the content. If the content becomes harder to take, then we'll have to just come up with a better way to circumnavigate the legal issues.

And make no mistake. Eventually someone WILL carry Sad Panda's torch.

Why would this mean the end of fan translations? Companies don't have the resources to go after every rogue translator. The most that would happen is that they'd make an example out of a few to scare everyone else, but anyone with a brain knows how to upload stuff without leaving a trail. It is not at all difficult. I'm hoping that most fan translators have a brain, I can't be the only one and I'm sure there are people who know even more than I do when it comes to anonymous uploading.

>there's no easy method to share stuff anymore.

This is the internet, it's the very definition of "easy to share". Fan translators have been sharing stuff since long before there was a central place to grab anything. Some won't want to return to those days but that's their problem, isn't it?

(Damn that virtual girl from the 90s, it even go through my adblock, Oliver x))

I've made a few posts in the thread on E-hentai forums when the "debate" occures, and it saddens me to see everyone going with this jew thing and stuff. Also, I don't really see the point of blaming Fakku and everything else, while it's true that scanlated contents were remowed yesterday, there's still tons of things belonging to Wani in the database, it's only "a bit" harder to gain access to them.
Tenboro himself said that it had nothing to do with Fakku officialy, only notices by Wani they received and obliged. Not the first time they do that, some artists are purposefully banned (even though you can find them, somehow, again) but the matter was more about the EX-hentai part than E-hentai who's cleared from a long time ago.

In itself, it's a burden because E-hentai works as a nexus from everything hentai related, every scanlators put their stuff on (or are put on when they're available to the public), a vast community was build, the tools are powerfull enough to let you go through thousands and thousands of stuff. Sure, if it crashs down, it'll be a problem as the biggest H database stuff will fall down, but it's not like everything's down. As a lot of people said, and I say it too, that won't stop scanlators' works. Maybe some people will be at a sudden loss to grab their manga for a few weeks, but they're big people (at least they should be :p) so they'll find where to grab it anyway.
It was convenient for a few years but all things must come to an end.

We'll see how the case go from there, though, it's possible a lot of other publishers jump on that to break down the entire website.

Wrong. The Wani stuff is hidden from everyone, including moderators of E-hentai. There is no sekrit sekrit sekrit klub.

The only persln who can see them is likely Tenboro. If you see some, it’s likely he hasn’t gotten around to hiding it yet. Some stuff was juet uploaded today, for instance.

To answer your first question, yes it will. Most people who got scared in the first Wani raid moved exclusively to releasing Wani stuff on E-hentai (for example Lusty became Lazarus). Now that that's gone, they probably will drop translating Wani things at all.

Not to mention that Gunma chapter lol.

What I hope is that the sales for Wani in the US will be so bad that they do not see any profit from expanding their market and give up on the whole purge thing. People who buys stuff from company like Wani, in my opinion, support their way of bulling people who have no wealth nor influence. They may say it is for the profit for the artist or authors but it is just an excuse to justify their actions. If piracy is as bad as they claimed to be, then a lot of authors or artists all over the world will be dropping like flies. Authors would not have become millionaires, game companies would be shut down everywhere and mangakas will drop their mangas halfway through. They say they wanna protect the rights of authors or artist but they are actually protecting their own pockets by monopolizing the stuff and purging it on the internet to force people to buy the products tagged with an extra expensive price. If this continues, in 10 years we would have to pay $0.99 just to smile and an extra $9.99 to laugh. By that time, they would have copyrighted even jokes and you have to pay to listen to them otherwise they will sue you. That is not the future i wanna live in. So let us have our fun! Money is not everything! Nobody likes a party pooper!

Highly doubtful. Even if they cut ties with Jacob, we're all still filthy gaijin pirates. They blame us for all scans when most are from Japanese people anyway.

It won't fail because:

1) it's 2014 and people are still crying over censorship.
2) Translations of things thst would've never seen the light of day are probable now aswell. Do you guys realize how many stories are in each magazine? Very few are even translated.

iuhh
iuhh

Come on guys, you all had to see easy pirating coming to an end. The US has actually taken the FBI off of it and put the Department of Homeland Security guys on piracy now. They are even trying to make the claim that piracy is an act of terrorism on an economy. In American(And a lot of the 'free' Western nations) there are terrorism laws that let agencies get around some things(In the US if you are labled a terrorist, you don't get Habius Corpu). Seeing as how the West bows to American pressue about piracy, it has really become unsafe for scanlator teams in the Western world to do what they do. It was all bound to end at some point, I am suprised it lasted into the 2010s and wasn't knocked out back in the 00s.

You can get 50 years for piracy in the US. Rapists and murderers can get much less.

Oliver, you really should contemplate what you will do when(I say when, because it will happen) attention is turned to you. Are you willing to go to jail or spend a large sum of money in the name of this site? The will, and has, extradited pirate sout of the EU before if your nation will not do it themselves.

I'll have to agree with iuhh, movie, music and comics piracy have all died and stopped a long time ago already, and it's only logical hentai will follow suit.

ayle

I'll have to disagree with you on that Oliver. Government crackdown don't actually do anything for piracy. Actually the government trying to regulate the Internet and prevent people from access whatever they want to access don't work, thanks to the way it's built. On the case of piracy, a large number of pirates do so for the sake of convenience. Now for the price of one fast food meal, you can have all the music, movies or books you want. That's what drive the piracy numbers down.

All the government getting overly involved do is just drive it underground without actually doing anything to reduce the number of pirates. When a Google search won't work anymore and you can't download things from your browser, people will just move back to dedicated sharing technologies, when the focus will be put on those, then another layer of obfuscation will be added on top, with encrypted traffics and proxies. In the end it just becomes a technological arms race that the government cannot win because they cannot do anything proactively lest they completely break the web and negatively impact legitimate businesses(eg, SOPA). And the great thing about technology is that you can make extremely complex solution appear as simple as clicking on a button to the end user.

Now when it comes to scanlation, including hentai scans, they are not going anywhere. If all the online reading sites were to be shut down overnight, all that would happen would be a return the p2p days, or maybe back to the IRC days (brings back memories…). Piracy is here to stay, hell the 3rd largest country in the world doesn't care about the concept of intellectual property and there is nothing the US can do about it.

I wasn't expecting to write this much on a hentai website lulz.

Also, the most humane reason for DLing pirated stuff isn't just about not being able to afford (the exorbitant prices or simply, not worth the money to pay for) or access (certain countries, like where I come from, BANS SUCH MATERIALS TOTALLY for unspeakable political reasons) such stuff, and that NOT ONLY includes porn, but also normal stuff like movies, music and games as well!
And there is also another underlying reason why people still do it even if they have the means to get it legally: The (un)accountability of "where the money goes" when buying such items, like exactly how much of the money we pay for IP, really goes to the REAL content creators and NOT distributors and/or the hated giga-corps (aka the middlemen). And once they realize that despite paying over the roof for such IP-laden materials, the makers of it in the first place gets no more than peanuts for their work! Now that makes anyone who wants to carve out a career in this puke gallons! Unless the makers themselves can carve out their own distribution route without any of those filthy greedy middlemen (like what some content creators in the Scandinavian Countries do) which draws people to pay since they know the money they shell out does go to the RIGHTFUL places and allows the creators to earn their next meal.
As such, those middlemen look like the kind of "rent-seekers" of the IP Industry, padded in part by the TPPA in which many who believe in proper IP protection are against as it only works for the interests of the "rent-seekers" and NOT the "content makers".

Project-H had a panel at Anime Expo this year which I attended. They know that scanlations is rampant. Of course we all know the story about Japanese publishers trying to stop scalations by hiring laywers to send cease and desist letters but that didn't stop scanlations. Some publishers has stopped because lawyers cost $$$ while some are still trying. Scanlations isn't going anywhere.

To translators, editors, typesetters out there, Project-H is looking for people like you for hire. You get your name published in the book and you get a percentage from each book sold.

Sad to see this Sad Panda purge as well as the (hopefully temporary until it can come back in another form) loss of MangaTraders. While reading scanlated manga (hentai, shounen, sienen, shoujo, mecha, yaoi, etc I like) isn't the be all end all of my life… it's something I enjoy greatly.

I DL because I'm a cheapskate, I'm content greedy, and convenience. At even $5 a vol (or tank) there's no way I could support my current manga habit. So, like so many other leaches, I need to work a little harder to gather my manga.

No more Gumna an a lot of other material for now. As more publishers notice the effect, more content removed until none left. Like I said earlier, I was suprised we kept it going this long. Publishers and studios blame all their financial problems on foreigners who read translated manga and shows, so it was just a matter of time.

The funny part is pornography sales are going down in the Western world across all boards due to piracy, as well as the torrential flood of amateur stuff now. Seems like every couple under 40 uploads a sex tape now. I don't see hentai making all that much profit in the West, as Japanese material is already a small sub-group of people, and hentai is an even smaller group of that.

Not with guns and bombs but with lawyers and money. And guys like Oliver will get caught in the middle. We've all seen it and some have lived it. It won't matter if you have a site, are a scanner or a translator sooner or later it will reach you. The question I have for all of you is what will you do? Keep going or shut down? I don't get what all the fuss is about? For real.

How many years has it been since the first piracy act on the web?
How many lawsuits, arrests and shutdown have we seen?

And yet, the whole web piracy was never this developped and efficient.
Check the UK, even governements are starting to accept it as a part of modern life.

If tomorrow e-hentai closes…so what? Another place will show up.
If a scanlator team closes…same thing. A new team under a week.

I've seen enough greek tragedies in the fansub, cracking and ripping scenes that i'm not one bit moved or annoyed by what COULD happen to e-hentai.
Much less doujin-moe or other scanlation websites that have a membership system…lamest thing of all.

Like you said Oliver, if you get a DMCA for something you posted, then you just remove it and continue to live your life. It's not the end of the world.
After all, copyrights owners have every rights to do so.
It's us, nasty pirates who are using things we don't own (and some even dare making money out of it!!).

So guys, before calling names and start a revolution, just look at your hard drives' content…you are thieves, like me, like everyone else. You can't possibly be mad to lose something you don't own in the first place…
To admit it is the first step towards enjoying it.

Just my 2 cookies…

– Chrunchyroll's news : not a big surprise. I doubt I'll be the target, so the relevance of it all doesn't outshine the e-hentai thingy, it is just like the e-hentai thingy. Anyway, if I'm contacted with a request to remove contents, I obey, and life goes on.
– the e-hentai purge : although I don't like e-hentai (it's a matter of taste and sensibility, their interface has always given me headaches and puzzled me, for some reason), I reckon this site has become a central nexus of hentai, with all releases from all groups in all languages eventually being added by the community to the e-hentai database. The most controversial content was added to a supposedly secret place called exhentai. But recently all the galleries belonging to artists signed up with wani have been suddenly deleted without warning or explanation. That meant a LOT of galleries. Following this, the community became mad at Wani who was obviously the cause, and at Jacob, admin of Fakku, with weird accusations that it was all a plot by Jacob, because Fakku had signed an agreement to sell Wani's tanks to the westerners. Much drama, sadness and hate followed.

Thanks for the rundown! :D

It's a shame you will have to take down some of the content. Please warn us like a few days before taking it down so we could get it before it's forever lost in the net(don't really want to hunt down random sites just to get these things)

Tbh i too didn't like it. I prefer your site than there, but i understand that the site has a lot of old works that is rare to find since older websites are either gone or the links have expired(because of Megaupload incident)

I actually just recently once again came there at their G.e-hentai.org which i'm assuming is the same as e-hentai. Found some old Bible Black art books there :D

I did heard of exhentai. After researching it, so it is that site that has a "sad panda" pic whenever i tried accessing it back then. You needed to install a google chrome plug in just to log in to the site
http://haruhichan.com/forum/showthread.php?25188-…!

I also heard about Fakku and Wani's relationship and how people now feared that the works that posted on Fakku will be remove now that they are an official publishing company now.

Damn dark times ahead for us Ero, H-manga lovers T__T

With Japan already forming 15 publishing groups trying to take foreign sites down, i do fear what's gonna happen in the coming years.

Oh well as long as hentairules survive all of this i'm fine with it.

You haven't removed any Wani works here have you? I heard they have rights to artists works like Kisaragi Gunma's Welcome to Tokoharusou.

Which is included in your megapack :)
