Just a pointless rant, without any conclusion anyway… just, well, something I had to get out of my system. I’m feeling better to write it out, at least…
I can’t truly get this out of my mind, it’s both stupid, and so sadly typically human. Like we’re never making any progress.
Have you heard about the silly Sakimichan crusade? The artist lewded a teenage female character, turning her into both a babe and an adult, explaining she had drawn an older version of her. Sankakucomplex has coverage of it with screenshots, Twitter has the original tweet (but I suspect some of the most embarrassing reactions are or will be deleted eventually.)
And a whole brigade of self-righteous people blamed the girl for “drawing a child”, calling it pedophilia.
It wouldn’t matter that the character is a drawing, inspired from an anime, inspired from a manga, AKA fictional.
It wouldn’t matter that an adult was drawn, as she was a teenager in the series (aged 13 or 14, I think.)
It wouldn’t matter the original age of 13/14 (I’m too lazy to check) isn’t pedophilia anyway, there’s a word for that and it’s psychologically different from pedophilia.
I have no sympathy for those who deliberately dumb themselves to feel they’re right.
And, btw, all women used to be children at some point, so we’re all pedos? So logical.
It’s ridiculous, and it saddens me for so many reasons, argh.
One of those reasons, is that when I enter internet discussions, I’m frequently called an SJW, and it’s getting me grouped with scum like that who find it normal to harass an artist over such stupid reasons. For fuck’s sake, don’t group “let’s have fun poking alt-right-retards with facts” Oliver with the moral bigots, please.
But mostly, it’s showing we simply don’t fucking evolve.
Before the internet, we had school bullying and workplace bullying. The former required individual strength in the earlier grades, social charisma in the latter grade, while at work, it’s a combination of being a good sucker to the higher-ups and a good psychopath (no empathy, skilled liar) to the colleagues and lower ranks.
And now, with the internet?
You don’t need to be muscular. You don’t need real life (in person) charisma. You don’t need good manipulation and lying skills.
You can be an ugly nobody unable to hold a five minutes conversation face to face with someone, and be a bully, woot, woohoo! Just start a twitter thread, and enjoy the sensation of power as you report someone for being a pedo, and smile as your retweet counter explodes.
That doesn’t reduce the count of school and workplace bullies, that simply adds numbers to the bullies’ army, now incorporating people who would have had zero chance of oppressing others before.
Just because, damnit, it’s still in our nature. As a species, we invented writing, music, theorized justice, reached out to space, created wikipedia, but there’s always that thirst for blood, that pleasure to harass the weaker.
Until recently, harassing, oppressing, was the privilege of the strong, of the skilled, and now with the internet, any small loser can try his hand and become one of the “alphas”.
They’re all weak, deep inside. Weak, small, puny persons. The truly strong don’t need to do that.
But it’s making me so sad to have, every day, on so many occasions, a renewed “opportunity” to witness we don’t progress, that every one of us has that seed of being rotten deep inside
