It’s just too bad the story was not set in Japan, otherwise, it could have been revealed that the maid was a poison-taster, in similar style as Kagero from the “Ninja Scroll” movie of 1993.
And had things progressed just like that movie, villain-san might have come calling looking to score some free T, A and P … only to meet a grisly fate soonafter.

Well, it’s not my kink either, but clearly you have to make the reader care about the characters before you ruin their lives. Otherwise, the ruin won’t have any impact on readers.
